How do I change the gear linkage bushes on a 1996 ford festiva

Check the coupler, sometimes the rubber wears out prematurely;then investigate the cause of the deterioration,Chect the frimness of the connection right near the trans assemble.....Bushings take almost forever to wear out,a loose or damaged coupling will cause your problems...

Loose 5spd shifter

I would be checking the pivot pin that the lever pivots on in the tower on top of the box . This pin is screwed in and lock nutted and they have a habit of coming loose . The lever is tensioned by a spring around the pivot ball and there is normally a plastic bush on the end of the lever that slides in the selector rail slot . But I think that you will find the fault in the pin in the turret housing.

Clutch not letting engagement of gears, clutch pedal is soft.

hi first thing to try is to adjust the clutch pedal cable up that is done at the gearbox side by adjusting the 10mm nut on the end of the cable, if after you have done this you can then select gears you will most probably need to replace clutch due to wear.if you cant select any gears even after adjusting the cable then it sound like you have a problem with the selector rod a common fault is for the bushes to wear and knock the selector out of line, check for excessive play in selector rod rubber bush.

Ford festiva 93 model wa

i gather that you are keeping the transmision selector handle in the Drive position.
qturn the car around and go up the hill again but this time set the selector on 2 and see if it works better.
then try it in drive position again but at a slow speed,,the trans should stay in a lower gear and pull easily.
This will tell you if the trans is shifting properly or not.

And no i doubt very much if it is the filter since you dont mention any problems on a level roadbed.

Shifting gears very stiff.

I am afraid I bare bad news... the transmission is suffering from swollen selector fork bushings. ATF fluid swells the bushings up, it used to be what was used to lubricate the transmission. however ford has long ago changed the specs to what is called Ford Honey manual trans oil its has a brown honey color or royal purple synchomax. they only fix for this is to replace the selector forks and inly use ford honey manual trans oil. there is a TSB issued for the fluid.
