Bad timing moter has not ben started.timing has moved. need pictures of top dead center of the cams and the crankl.

SOURCE: in replacing engine timeing belt,

no you will bend valves if not carefull. you can only turn over from crankshaft if timing marks were in correct position in first place.

How do i set timing chain on sprockets ,ie top dead centre.


I don't know what car you have, so here's what was needed on mine:
1. Bring engine to Top Dead Center, ready to fire #1. There should be a mark on the front pulley or on the flywheel. Move cams to the TDC mark, too. My car was twin cam, the front cams needed to face apart, and set the marks....

Yours may be different.

I have a 2003 mazda 6 with 2.3 i think it might be out of time but i cant find the timing marks on the pulleys


Sir. The only other way to know your on no one cylinder top dead center is to take the numbers of the firing order,
White them down with the first 3 in one colum and the second three firing numbers in a colum next to the first three. The numbers across from each other are called " mating cylinders".
If #1 cylinder is ( example ) next to #6 on your paper, then those two are mating cylinders. Meaning one ( with valve cover/s off) will , when engine in turned over slowly, will be on valve overlap, while its mating cylinder is on
Top Dead Center to fire. In valve overlap, when the motor is turned slowly one way, the exhaust valve will open and when engine is slowly turned the other way, the intake valve starts to open. At that point when either exhaust or intake valve is moving on #6 cylinder valve trane, #1 is at top dead center which will be not even 180degrees out, but top dead center on #1 cylinder. Now your at the firing point of #1, which will coincide with the rotor pointing at #1 plug wire on the distributor cap. In essence, static ( not
engine running ) the rotor bug should be about 17 degrees early in the cap. This makes up for slack in any timing chain and gear slack between the distributor gear to cam gear. This when running put you about 4-6 degrees advanced. Computor models will time it for itself. See example below.

If your timing order is 153624 then use the chart. As you list your order on paper, remember one mating number is firing and it's mating cylinder is on valve overlap. 180 deg out would be
#1 valves " rocking " and no 6 is on compression. When a cylinder is on the compression stroke, valves will not move. ( both closed ). So, write down your timing order, v6 or inline 6, or 4 cyl or 8 cylinder. It don't matter. If you look at the manifold , it will give the timing order, maybe on the head or Internet. Two columns, walla.
Hope that helps get you to true #1 top dead center. This system is the only true way, along with a cardboard timing wheel for the crank if needed , to adjust valves, lifters and know where the engine is at all times.
Hope that helps. Sorry for the detail, engines are really very simple, once you " get the picture ". Don't make it to difficult. Crank turns two times to one revolution of the cam.

Finding out how to find lost cam timing mark on a 1997 volvo 960


you are in a bit of a bind. Turning the engine over will result in bent valves so do not touch the crank shaft. you have to loose off all the rockers/ cam followers even to the point of removing the cam shaft. having done that remove no1 cylinder spark plug and by the use of a thin piece of wire turn the crank until the piston reaches top dead center. find this by rocking the crank back and forward until the piston dose'n move up or down check for the crank timing mark next replace the cam shaft and position the cam lobes for no1 piston in such a position that the inlet and exhaust valves move slightly up or down when the cam is moved slightly left or right. this is called valve over lap and with the piston on top dead center means that you now have valve timing for the engine. Cam timing marks can be dot on gear to shiny link on chain or if using a belt a dot on tooth lineing up with mould mark or join on head before starting up do a compression check to prove that there are no bent valves. if you are not mechanically minded enough to attempt the valve timing method it may be cheaper in the long term to let a qualified person do the job

what you have to do is clean the chain very well you are looking for 2 links that are different colors than the rest (bronze colored ) count the links between the two rotate the cam 2 12:00 with the dowel pin up or the dot on the edge of the pulley put the chain on with the links on each mark and set the tensioners in place

How do I know when my camshafts are top dead center the outter timing pulley was loosened stupidly before we could mark anything


Not to worry. The cam gear has marks on it already. When the cams are aligned at Top Dead Center (TDC) the keway for the pulley will be pointing UP and the marks on the edge of the pully will be lined up with the valve cover sealing surface of the cylinder hed. (See picture below)

Found top dead center to change timing chains but the cam rolled 1 inch hw=can i jus roll it back to where it was and be accurate


There should be marks on the timing chain gears that you will need to align for proper timing.
That the cam moved is not an issue as long as the marks are properly aligned.
If you do not have a Chiltons or Haynes manual for your vehicle I would recommend that you get one to make sure the vehicle is properly timed. Doing it once is bad enough without having to do it over.

You should need the timing light if you didn't move the distributor. If everything is lined up to top dead center, it should start.Make sure the cams and crank pull are set to 0 or at their marked position. Then you can mark the crank pulley with nail polish or some paint at 0 degree and then turn your timing light on while the engine is running and adjust distributor to advance or ****** the ignition timing. Usually its around 8-10 degrees before top dead center. You could refer to the manual for the exact degree.

Finding the timing marks is simple, it is an impression (a small arrow) on both the crank and the cam. As for the exact time set, I would refer to the owner's manual but if you are doing it off the cuff pull the number one piston top dead center, line up the rotor button with the number one piston and set crank at top dead center and cam at bottom dead center. This will be a good starting point, but the owner's manual will give you more exact instructions.

Replacing timing belt need to know how the cams should be set before installing belt.


The top camshafts need to be 'locked' into place. You can purhase or rent a tool to do this. If you don't hold the cams in place they will move when the belt tension is released. Always set the crank to top dead center and mark all gears just in case.
