The parts aren't really that expensive, it's the labor these places charge an hour. Call around and see who can do it the cheapest, unless you want to do it your self.

There is a cutout on the inner part of the camwheel. It has a demarkation shaped like the tip of an arrow. This should line up to the 3:00 point on the edge of the head. you can tell for sure because at this position you should easily be able to move the camshaft sprocket about 3/4 inch in both directions easily from the pinpoint.

Sounds like you may have a voltage regulator problem. Have the alternator voltage regulator checked out for correct voltage and charging.
