If your looking to replace them, wich is what most do today, it is cheaper to purchase a axle with new cv joints than to rebuild them. It is a very simple job in todays cars, remove tires remove lower tie rod , remove nut in center of the rotor and pull wheel assembley to the side hanging from the strut, pull axle out replace the transmission seal, push new axle in. When putting wheel assembley on, use a hydraulic jack on bottom of the rotor to push it to the axle splines and put the new nut on .

SOURCE: rear axle leaking

Block the front tires. Break the rear lugs loose. Jack up the rear of the truck at the center if possible. remove the wheels & brake drums. Remove the brake shoes, return springs & all the other hardware. Remove the differential cover & drain oil. If you have a posi the next step sucks. You need to remove the threaded pin from the housing & remove the axle retaining clips. All the while, being carefull of the spring in the posi unit. If no posi, then same procedure, minus the "pucker factor". After the axle is out, take a large flat blade screw driver or pry bar & pop the seal out. Keep in mind the axle bearing is probably gone too , so that's another procedure. Keep it apart, you'll be glad you did.

SOURCE: 2004 chevy cavalier makes a ''knocking'' sound

You have outer CV joint bad on the right side, suggest you replace both sides with complete rebuilt axles you can get at any discount autoparts stores... some of them can even do the repair for you... replace seals, axles and align, be done with it and have a peice of mind... not to exepensive a couple hundred bucks...sometimes what happens is the rubber boot on the CV joint tears and throws its grease out every where around the wheel well, look for grease splatter, a good clue....

SOURCE: right rear axle seal leaks

If only your axle seals are leaking then just remove one axel at a time. Take it to an automotive machine shop where they will press of the old seals bearings and reatainer and press on a new seal barring and reatainer all greased up and ready to slide back into place. No need to replace the whole axle for a leaky seal. Once this is done with both sides ( assuming both sides are leaking) refil the differential so the oil just starts to ooze out of the fill hole and replace the cap. Presto you are good to go. Also an important note. Make sure sure rear breaks are not soaked in 90W oil. This will impede your breaking ability and cause a dangerous situation. If the break pads are soaked they will most likely need to be replaced.

I had my left and right axle seals replaced on my 2004 chevy cavalier last week. When I picked up my car, I heard a hollow knocking sound. I brought my car back in and they told me my axle links(?)...

Not sure what axle links are but they may have been referring to the stabilizer links. These are surrounded by rubber bushings and plastic.Short of them breaking they are difficult to see how rusted they are until they actually break because they usually break on the inside which isn't very visible. But what I am questioning more then anything is the price for replacement. If it is the link pins they were referring too anything over 125.00 150.00 for this repair is way to much and that should repair both sides.

2004 chevy cavalier makes a ''knocking'' sound

This could be any number of things. It could be your CV axle going bad, your tie rod joint has gone bad, your lower ball joint has gone bad. More than likely it will be your CV axle. What you need to look for is rips on any of the boots for these parts. The one that has the rip will more than likely be your problem. Just check for grease coming out of any of these parts and you will find your culprit because it has dried up and is causing the knocking sound. Let me know if you have any further questions. 1999 dodge cummins 2500 front axel seals

you need to pull off wheels, brakes, rotor /unit hub bearing, both axles and intermediate shaft, as well as the vac disconnec ton the front axle tube. if only the right side leaks then only then only pull the right axle and intermediate shaft and vac disco. it is a trick with a miller tool to replace the seal. the left side seal is inside the diff and the carrier has to come out to replace it. pete
