I have had the same problem. The AA came out and took the gear stick out and found the cause was the selector bush had gone, as a result I've just bought a replacement gearstick which was £46 inc VAT and delivery from a breakers yard. If you do this make sure they supply you with the selector bush because it might not come with this. Putting the new gearstick in should take no more than 30 mins.

SOURCE: cant shift out of park

I had the same problem last year. I never found out why it went. Looked in manual, found the emergency shifter switch inside the left side of the shifter (you have to reach inside) to be able to drive it until I made a repair appt. My mechanic built some sort of bypass to keep that emergency switch on all the time, so now I don't have to depress the brake pedal to shift at all. I don't have the money to get it diagnosed and properly fixed :(

SOURCE: engine management light on ,suzuki grand vitara 2

Take the car to an autoparts store and have them scan the computer for any fault codes stored. The check engine light is to alert you that the computer has noted a fault in one of the car's systems. Getting the codes will show what the computer has noted and curb the need for speculation. Most parts stores will perform the scan for free. Hope this helped and best wishes.

I want to locate where the gear box oil goes in my vautomatic vitara 1996 model

Gear Box Oil refers to manual transmission normally. Goes in a 1/2 inch or so hole in the side of the box. You don't need to add unless it is leaking. Remove the plug and put your finger into the hole. If you get oil on your finger, it is full.

I'm not familiar with a 'vautomatic' ... if this is a type of automatic in the Suzuki (I am a Suzuki MC expert) you will find the dip stick in the engine compartment. There will actually be two dip sticks ... one for engine oil (black) and one for the trans (oil should be red or pink). If it is dark or smells burnt, have it replaced.

Stiff gears

You can try using synthetic gear lube, I have found it reduces shift effort by at least half when it is cold.
