Question about Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Open Question

Can the fuel selector switch in the cab of a 1977 C20 Chevy truck be wired backwards?

I put in 25.00 worth of fuel in the drivers side tank last night...drove it all of 10 miles after doing so...this morning the truck died on me....after taking it to a repair shop and having them replace the fuel pump and the filter to the carb, the mechanics asked me if I was sure I had gas in the tanks. As far as I knew I did...not much on one side and half tank on drivers side according to my fuelk guage which was not working when I purchased the truck. Trouble shooting that problem I found along the chassis frame about 8 to 10 inches of wire missing with two ends danglin loose. I then put a jumper wire between the two dangling ends and wallla my guage started working again. Now I'm not sure of my guage working propperly since all it turned out to be was that I ran out of fuel but my guage was showing 3/4 tank on the drivers side or LH of the selector switch inside the cab on the dash. I switched it to RH and the guage feel to empty..now I am assuming that if you push the switch at the bottom it should be on the LH tank with the switch noticeable at the top of the actualuy switch and away from the RH...It feels like the selector switch is wired upside down or backwards. Could it be a faulty swittch? but why when tripping the switch does the fuel guage show an empty tank and a fuller tank..I am totaly confused to whict postion the switch is supposed to be on for which tank...pushed in at the bottom for LH or pushed in at top for RH? or vice versa...since the switch under the vehicles is electronic how can I test it to know which tank it is actually currently feeding fuel from?

SOURCE: I was driving down the road at about 30 mph and the truck died.

Sounds like it could possibly be the inertia switch. Check to see if you can hear the fuel pumps kicking on, if not the check your inertia switch. They are made to shut the fuel pumpa off if the vehicle has an impact or roll over. Sometimes they go bad or the wire connections get corroded. I believe it is located in the kick panel on the passenger side. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: 1982 chevy truck with dual gas tanks with guage or tank problems

all you need to do is listen to hear the tank switching valve is working. It will make a soft noise under the rear cab section with the key on with the engine off. zif you do hear it sounding the switch your tank unit for that one tank you try to switch to is a fault. Sorry no illustrated diagrams are on hand, just knowledge

SOURCE: 1995 nissan pickup truck fuel problem

Fuel injected or carb? Make sure fuel line itself is clear. Some pumps are designed to self regulate (carb systems) some continually pump and a psi regulator sends back the excess fuel back to the tank (fuel inj systems) If the line is obstructed then pump can't deliver fuel fulltime.

If you think pump is not on consistent, try running a dedicated wire through a switch directly to the pump. If it works then you are looking for an electrical fault going to pump. Good luck.

I've been told the fuel tank selector switch (in the cab) is bad on my 79 Ford E150 van. I have a new 2-pole switch, but since nothing is labeled I have no idea where to attach the wires from the old to...

yes these dash switches have allways been a problem the best way is to replace it with correct one from autoparts store but i usually replace tank selector valve at same time (there both about due) shield your eyes when dealing with this device as gas sprays out when removing it
a note : observe fuel level while driving on both switch posisitions the faulty one will indicate No fuel level when you know you got gas in both tanks

The gas tank on the passenger side wont pump gas to the carb. but the gas tank on the drivers side works good so im not for sure what to do to fix it. i cant find the fuel filter!! 1983 chevy

In 1983 the fuel filter was in the carburator. Unscrew the fuel feed line that ges into the frnt of the carb and then undo the really big nut. Inside the nut is the fuel filter. Pay attention to how it goes in spo you don't get it backwards when you put it back together.
There is also a sock on the fuel pick-up in the tank.
Your problem probably is in the tank selector valve. It is mounted on the inside of the frame on the passenger's side at the front of the tanks. I don't know if there is any way to fix it except to replace it. I never bothered, just used the tank that worked. The GM service manual doesn't show any repair procedures for it. Hope this helps.

What is the easiest way to replace the fuel guage and fuel pump for the front tank on a 1995 f150 long bed?

the fuel gauge should not be replace as it should be only one for both tanks when you switch tank selector the wiring also switches so you get reading from the tank you are using .now to replace the fuel pump you have to drop the fuel tank, some people say its easier to remove the bed but i disagree. hope this helps you

Fuel tank selector solenoid on a 1988 ford ranger. It wont select between the two tanks. Am i supposed to have voltage at the switch in the cab or does it originate from the solenoid?

The switch in the cab may be a ground. If you can trace the wire to the solenoid looks for power coming out wire color and see if they match to the tank.

Of course check all fuses and wires. Did you pull a wire lose driving over debris?

Also check the hose to the tank from the switch.
Removing the switch and testing it away from the fuel is safest.
With that many years on the truck I suspect switch failure.

Good luck with it - let me know any progress.

Where is the fuel tank switch for the 1986 F 250 pickup ? I just bought the truck used & can't seem to find the selector switch.

it depends on what part of the switch your looking for. in the cab its on the right side of your heater control unit. but the actual switch is under the drivers side in front of the first fuel tank inset in the frame rail. it will have fuel lines going in and out and an electric connector.

1985 CHEVY TRUCK NO FUEL FROM EITHER TANK

sounds like the fuel tank selector valve is bad, it should be located between the fuel tanks.could just be a wire off so you might want to give it a close check before buying one. and as long as you are under the vehicle you might want to check that it is getting electrical power to the valve/switch.

When I switch from my front fuel tank to my rear tank gas stops

There is no selector valve on a 1995 ford f150 300 engine. The selector switch on the dash sends power to the pump in the selected tank. The pump then sends fuel to the engine. If engine won't run on the selected switch, the pump in that tank needs replaced.
