If it is a manual gearbox, use transmission fluid. If it is an automatic gearbox, use Automatic Transmission Fluid. The compliance plate (usually found in the engine bay) will tell you exactly what type to use. But the best way is to just have a look at the bottles in the retailers, and check the specifications written on the bottle to make sure that it is OK for your model. If you have a Ford dealer close by to where you live, ask them for the right fluid, and you can't go wrong then.

I have a 2001 Ford Windstar van and when I accelerate, Transmission fluid floods out of the vehicle. What are possible reasons. Shifts into gears with no problems or hesitation.

I would suggest that you check the oil level in the transmission and make sure that it is not over full as this cause frothing and an overflow situation.

Possible leaks are 1. Transmission belly Pan gasket 2. Front pump/torque converter seal. 3. Transmission fluid cooler lines 4. Axle seals at right and left half shafts.

What would cause a2001 ford windstar to empty its transmission fluid every now and then

check for a leaking pan gasket, a hole in pan, or a bad drain plug. good-day ! check front transmission pan seal. if bad it will leak and not hold back fluid when transmission is hot.

I have a 2001 ford windstar van, & my power steering fluid is reddish in color...is that normal?

Yes. The fluid is also red for the Transmission on Ford products and some others. The color is to aid in leak detection, just as Antifeeze is colored to help spot leaks.

When it got cold the reverse stopped working. transmission fluid was low,. does the wrong transmission fluid make a big diff

Yes the wrong transmission fluid make a difference and low transmission fluid also can cause this. Mercon* V I believe is what is used on your transmission, but please recheck that information in your owners manual. Good luck and keep me posted and also note: transmission fluid will cause transmission failure.

2000 ford windstar transmission jumps when i put

If the mounts are okay and you are getting a hard slam it could be the TFT (Transmission Fluid Temp sensor in the trans pan) or the Pressure control solenoid in the valve/control body.
