With the timming marks lined up make sure that cylinder 1 is at top dead center on the compresion stroke, then as you lower the distributer back in make sure that the rotor is pointing to the number 1 plug wire post on the distributor cap,mark the distributor where the #1 post is since you can't install it with the cap on.

The Isuzu is a strange animal-when you do the timing belt you set it with #1 TDC "BUT" the distributor is timed with TDC #4 I found this the hard way and finally had to buy a cd with the procedures on it. Send me an e-mail address and I will forward the associated pictures &

TIMING BELT & SPROCKETS R & I
NOTE: Some procedures may differ slightly due to engine
construction.
Removal
1) Remove all necessary air ducts. Position No. 4 piston at
TDC of compression stroke. Align timing marks. See Fig. 2. Remove fan
and fan shroud. Remove belts. If necessary, remove radiator and
splashguard.
2) Prevent engine from rotating and remove crankshaft timing
pulley retaining bolt. Remove upper and lower timing belt covers.
Remove spring from tension pulley. Loosen adjusting bolt and move
pulley toward water pump. Remove timing belt.
CAUTION: Ensure pistons are at TDC when rotating camshaft or damage
may result.
Inspection
1) Handle timing belt carefully. Avoid twisting or kinking
belt. Do not allow belt to become contaminated by water, oil, dirt or
other contaminates. Inspect belt for cracks or damage. If necessary,
replace.
2) Measure tension pulley spring length and force. Spring
length should not exceed 2.76" (70.2 mm) and spring force should not
be less than 197-347 lbs. (27-48 kg).
3) Replace tension pulley spring if not within specification.
Installation
1) Pull tensioner fully toward water pump side and
temporarily tighten retaining bolt. Ensure No. 4 cylinder is at TDC on
compression stroke by rotating crankshaft until keyway aligns with
mark on front crankshaft seal housing (12 o’clock). Rotate camshaft
until timing mark on cam gear (arrow) aligns with mark on upper
camshaft cover (notch). See Fig. 2.
NOTE: When timing marks are aligned as stated above, No. 4 piston
is at TDC on compression stroke.
2) Position timing belt over crankshaft sprocket, oil pump
sprocket, camshaft sprocket and tensioner in that order. Ensure belt
is positioned in sequence given and without slack between sprockets.
Loosen tension sprocket adjusting bolt allowing spring tension to
tighten belt. Tighten adjusting bolt temporarily.
3) Temporarily install crankshaft pulley bolt and rotate
crankshaft 2 complete revolutions in opposite direction of engine
rotation, until marks on crankshaft and front oil seal retainer are
aligned again. See Fig. 2. Loosen tensioner lock bolt, allowing
tesioner spring to fully adjust tension. Tighten tensioner lock bolt.
4) Install timing belt covers. To complete installation,
reverse removal procedures. Tighten all bolts to specification. See
TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of this article.

If the engine is an interference type, you will have some valve and piston damage. Typically the timing marks are on the crank shaft and the cam shaft, under the timing cover.

Need to know how to time and restab a distributor


Bring cyl #1 up to top dead on the compression stroke. Line up crank pulley timing mark up to zero on the timing indicator. Line up the rotor on the distributor to point to #1 on the rotor cap. Put distributor in slowly making sure you pick up the oil pump shaft while engaging the cam gear. If the oil pump shaft doesn't doesn't line up the distributor will not drop all the way in. Now but mount bolt back in but do not tighten. Hook up timing lite, start engine and move distributor to line up the correct timing mark then tighten distributor mount bolt.

I just changed timing belt on 82 volvo turbo, it starts and dies, if i excelerate it will keep going, otherwise it dies


no you check the tip of the rotor lines up with the edge of the cutout on your distributor body .that is the basic adjustment. you move the distributor very small amounts when adjusting the dwell angle when you use the timing light.

How do u set distributor in time on 89 Nissan z24 engine


If the sticker is still under the hood it has the answer on it.
I just did some work on an 87 Z24i,
Find the notch on the crank shaft pully and mark it with some bright paint.
Start and warm the engine so it is at operating temp.
Loosen the hold down bolt for the distributor (10mm)
Hook a timing light to the #1 intake side wire. (the cap also should have "I1" on it.)
hold the timing light so it shines on the pointed and the crank pully and turn the distributor until the marks are aligned where they should be. (the 87 California specs is 10 degrees).
Tighten the bolt and its set.

The distributor only has so much movement due to the slotted hole for the hold down bolt.
If it does not reach the timing specs it may be due to timing chain stretch. The cam gear has three holes in it to compensate for this. That is a little more work to do but if needed just come back to this and I can help you.

Let's back up. On top of the distributor with the cap removed there is an "8" and a "6" on the edge. With the harmonic balancer set with its' mark lined up with the timing pointer of the timing chain cover, the tip of the rotor should be lined up with the "6". If not, remove the hold down bolt, raise the distributor until the rotor can be turned, rotate rotor and set down until rotor of tip lines up with "6". See if it cranks normally then. A worn distributor gear (sharp edges) will also set this code and cause starting problems.

Regards to timing problem


If you can't get it close to #1 position by turning the distributor you have somethhing off. Double check your timing marks. Manualy turn the engine over 360* and line up your timing marks again. if you don't have a manual , here's a site to go to and download the specific area of the manual that you need. This is the tricky part... as I mentioned in my solution, When you install the distributor, the shaft will turn because of the gears. You are going to have to pull the distributor just enough so that the gears aren't meshing together and turn the shaft.take notice of which way the shaft turns when you remove the distributor. Once the gears aren't meshing, turn the shaft to the #1 position and go a little past the #1 position in the opposite way that the shaft turned.install the distributor and see where the rotor sits then.if it is still not in the right place, pull it again and go one gear tooth at a time until the rotor lines up with the #1 position.
