1993 Ford Taurus drivers side rear wheel cylinder piston is popping out

Happened while driving down the road. When I pulled the drum the self adjuster was free and damaged. repaired by replacing the brake shoes on both sides, New self adjusters Both sides, new brake hardware kit both sides and a new wheel cylinder to replace the damaged one. Test driving the same thing happened. I replaced another wheel cylinder and the drivers side drum. test drive - it happened again. it is the forward facing piston on the rear drivers side that is coming completely out of its cylinder. This is not my first rodeo with drum brakes and I am totally perplexed. This issue makes no sense in my brain so any help appreciated. What can cause this?

Your description sounds like the brakes are WAY out of adjustment. The brake cylinders need the shoes to hit the drum or they will do exactly what you describe. I always adjust the shoes until they lock the wheel, then back off until the wheel spins freely, usually 8 to 20 clicks.

For this to happen the cylinder piston has to travel out of the cylinder before the brake shoes contact the brake drum. even allowing for shoe adjustment this should not happen. check the brake drum it may have been machined over size .

You need a pullers to get it off.But if your lucky putting a screwdriver between the drum and back-plate and pize it when your hitting with a hammer it may come off.good luck.

Sounds like it is over extending its self. Have the drum checked for thickness. It may be too thin. Also check the pads. If all is good replace the piston.

How do you adjust the rear drum breaks on a 1990 Ford Laser Hatchback


to adjust the brakes --- at the bottom of the drum housing ( twords the inside of the car ) there should be a little oblong rubber cover. pop that cover off and you will see a gear looking wheel adjuster,, using a flathead screw driver rotate the wheel -- in one direction it will advance the shoes and in the other direction it will decrease the shoes. make sure the parking brake is off while you make the adjustment -- also make sure the side you are working on is jacked up off the ground so you can spin the wheel / hub to get the brake shoes in the right position. you should not hear any rubbing of the brakes as the drum spins. -- I find it best to turn the gear adjuster just to the point where the shoes start to grab,, then back off a couple clicks --- repeat on the other side and you should be good to go. hope this helps --

Jeep cherokee rear brake locks wheel on first few aplications


several things to check that can cause this,first check under the vehicle look at that wheel that is locking up see if its wet from a leaking wheel seal or a leaking wheel brake cylinder.if this is ok then find and pull on the emergency brake cable as it might be stuck on.and last thing is remove the wheel and pull off the drum if it has a drum and remove the brake dust this also causes your problem. in the case of a rotor and caliper it could be the caliper itself or the flex rubber hose to test you open the bleeder screw and push back the caliper if it goes back with little resistance it will be the rubber flex line that is causing the problem.

Replacing rear drum brakes. Need good diagram to indicate how to put it back together.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle and remove the wheel and brake drum from the wheel to be worked on. NOTE: If you have never replaced the brakes on a van before and you are not too familiar with the procedures involved, only dissemble and assemble one side at a time, leaving the other side intact as a reference during reassembly.
  2. Install a clamp over the ends of the wheel cylinder to prevent the pistons of the wheel cylinder from coming out, causing loss of fluid and much grief.
  3. Contract the brake shoes by pulling the self-adjusting lever away from the starwheel adjustment screw and turn the starwheel up and back until the pivot nut is drawn onto the starwheel as far as it will come.
  4. Pull the adjusting lever, cable and automatic adjuster spring down and toward the rear to unhook the pivot hook from the large hole in the secondary shoe web. Do not attempt to pry the pivot hook from the hole.
  5. Remove the automatic adjuster spring and the adjusting lever.
  6. Remove the secondary shoe-to-anchor spring with a brake tool. (Brake tools are very common implements and are available at auto parts stores). Remove the primary shoe-to-anchor spring and unhook the cable anchor. Remove the anchor pin plate. Fig. 2: Use an appropriate tool to disengage the retracting springs 88489g22.gif

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.

Brake shoe removel:

Depress and turn the retainers for the hold-down springs and pins to remove them from each shoe. Slide the brake shoe assembly--including the shoes and springs--down so you can disengage the top ends of the shoes from the cylinder and tilt them to lift them past the retaining plate.

Unhook the lower retracting spring from the front brake shoe to disconnect it. Spread the shoes apart at the bottom to remove the adjusting screw, the screw's retracting spring and the adjuster lever. Remove the front brake shoe.

Pull the parking brake cable spring back with diagonal cutting pliers, grip the cable with the pliers without cutting it, unhook the cable from the parking brake lever and remove the rear brake shoe with the lever.

Disconnect the parking brake lever from the rear shoe by spreading the retaining clip with a screwdriver and removing the clip and its spring washer.
  • Step 4 Pull the parking brake cable spring back with diagonal cutting pliers, grip the cable with the pliers without cutting it, unhook the cable from the parking brake lever and remove the rear brake shoe with the lever.
  • Step 5 Disconnect the parking brake lever from the rear shoe by spreading the retaining clip with a screwdriver and removing the clip and its spring washer.

    Drum Removal
    1. Remove the rear wheel and the tire assembly. Refer to Section 204-04 .
    1. Retract the brake shoes and loosen the brake adjuster screw.

    The rear drum brakes:
    • Have internal shoes that expand against the brake drum (1126).
    • Are a single-anchor type.
    • Are actuated by one rear wheel cylinder (2262).
    • Have two pistons in the rear wheel cylinder (2261). One exerts force against the upper end of the primary shoe; the other exerts force against the upper end of the secondary shoe.
    • Adjust rear brake shoes and linings (2200) automatically.
    • Need manual brake adjustment if the adjusters are not operating properly or after the rear brake shoes and linings have been replaced.
    When the brake pedal is applied, hydraulic fluid pressure forces the pistons in the rear wheel cylinder outward, moving the rear brake shoes and linings against the brake drum.
    The rear drum brake system includes the parking brake mechanism. Refer to Section 206-05 .
