I have a 1999 ford expedition hesitate wild running especially going up hills check engine light stays on auto part store meter reads p1071 banks lean and p1074 bank 2 lean can you tell me what this m

Engine spudder,missing badly,hesitate under load.i have changed fuel filer,fuel pump.maf sensor,pvc value,dpfe sensor,coil packs and plugs.still runs bad

It might but what exactly are the codes. Before you change the Mass air flow sensor, try cleaning it first with a can of mass flow cleaner.
If your running a oil K&N filter, there could be some oil residue on the sensor. Start with that and change the filter or clean it if it's a K&N.
The O2 sensor's could be bad also, you really need the code's to be sure what sensor is giving you the faulty signal.

I have a ford 2003 windstar that was running very rough when cold and almost stalling. engine light came on. went to autozone and they read the codes for free and told me it was running lean on Bank 2 also. i came home searched for the O2 front sensors online using the info autozone gave me. there are 2 front sensors on my car that need to be replaced at the same time. look for ones that have a direct plug in and don't need wire splicing. the ones without the wiring harness are cheaper but more of a pain, i think.
they were fairly easy to replace. getting access with the wrench was the worst. reset the light by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes. seems fine now and the light hasn't come back on.

The most common problem on a Ford with these codes is deteriorated PCV hoses. Check the hoses from the PCV valve to the intake manifold. Pay special attention to the rubber elbows. They often crack on the inside curve and the crack is hard to see.

this is very common on these. the upper intake seals leak and should be replaced. It is not a noticable vacuum leak and is usually worse when the engine is cold. It is not a very difficult job to do

Most likely you have a bad COP (Coil On Plug) .
Maybe more than one. Very common ford problem for last 12 years.
If you get a MIL Light on the dash (the wrench),check for a PO300 Code.
A PO304 would be coil #4,PO306 #6 Etc.
Cyl 1 thru 4 on pass side
Cyl 5 thru 8 on driver side,front to back

Also hills cause a hi engine vacuum and thus a possible EGR Valve going bad. You can unplug the vacuum lines and plug, to diagnose that issue.

Also leave the EGR disconnected if your working on coil issues. Just note the MIL light will stay on all the time,and remember to check your 300 codes if you feel a hesitaton or miss.

Code indicates system too lean. Check all of your hoses going into the intake especially the one on the PCV valve. The engine is getting air from other than the throttle body. Air not metered by the mass airflow. listen carefully for a hissing sound.

Black smoke is usually unburned fuel. P0171 reads bank 1 system too lean. There isn't one answer. You need to dig further and inspect your cars fuel system, from the pump to the injectors. Because of the mileage you may want to start off with a compression test just to see where you stand with the motor. write back if you have any other questions.

Understanding codes


Both banks are running lean meaning they are getting too much air and not enough fuel.
To start I'd try an expensive can of fuel cleaner which may just clean up your system enough to clear the codes.
If carbon has built up or fuel is low and gunk is entering the system, this could be the problem especially if you run your gas tank to near low a lot and if you rarely use a fuel cleaner.

Bank 1 burning to lean check engine light on flunked state emissions


It is a common problem, you will have to change bank 1, o2 sensor as it is covered in burnt oil and fuel telling the computer to run lean.
