SOURCE: ticking noise in engine and blue smoke in exhaust

the tapping are the lifts tapping because there is no oil getting to the top of the motor. the blue smoke is the oil burning.could be the head gasket is going bad or the piston rings are done in.

It probably is the catalytic converter.

The catalytic converter was one of the greatest emission control inventions in the history of monitoring carbon and greenhouse gas emissions. It starts in the engine, but the catalytic converter is the last stop for exhaust gases and the last chance to launder that nasty air before it shoots into the atmosphere, and our noses . How It Works, Basically: Your catalytic converter is a magical hot box. Ok, it's not magic, but it sounds magical the first time you hear how it works. Hot exhaust gases exit your engine and head through your exhaust to the catalytic converter. Inside this expanded tube is a massive network or honeycomb of ceramics. This ceramic checkpoint has been coated with compounds that react with the exhaust to eliminate certain harmful emissions. Even though the exhaust is flying through the tube at high velocity, the molecules that coat the ceramics are able to react in milliseconds, hanging on to the bad stuff until it's converted to something harmless (or less harmful) like Nitrogen, Carbon Dioxide or water vapor.

SOURCE: There is a ticking/knocking noise coming from

Have your valve clearance checked for that noise. As well as the diesel smell, fuel lines must be checked for
leaks. If your car is emitting heavy smoke, and it seems to loose power going uphill, your engine must
be due for overhauling. However, if your problem is just
knocking and diesel smell, valve clearance adjustment
and fuel line check up will correct the problem.

SOURCE: 2003 Ford Ranger ticking noise, not a ping or

THE ticking noise coming from the engine ..is it just a 1 tick on idle at about each rev of engine,,and does it make any differance to the running of engine ,,Does it get softer when it gets warmer.
As it sounds like a loose tappet and being a oil adjusted tappets this thought of thing does come in now and again. and the best thing to do is to get a small plastic tube 25mm (or 1' ) and 2ft long and put it to your ear and listen at the top of the rocker cover ans see if the noise gets louder in a certen place ,as you will hear it if it is there..
Other wise it could be a Small end on the conrod which the piston is connected to.... lets hope not.
So let me know as soon as poss the answers to all the above. Ron

Clunking, knocking noise under van after decelerating from 50 mph

Could be caused by a failed exhaust system hanger; check them out from under the van or before starting the engine, grab the end of the tail pipe and move it up & down, back and forth.

some ticking noises can be attributed to a failed exhaust manifold gasket or cracked exhaust manifold so check around those gaskets

1983 f150 with 351 windsor. Recent problem of bogging down when climbing moderate hills. Also sounds of ticking noise, lifters or manifolds leak? Any help much appreciated.

A leaking exhaust manifold could make a ticking noise. So could a lifter or valve. The exhaust noise would be louder under load.
If the carb is running too lean, or you have a vac leak, the lean fuel mixture could make the exhaust leak worse, and cause the loss of power.

Jaguar 2.7 diseal -s type. when i put my heater

Hi

Very common on this car is the EGR valve, it is basically an Exhaust Gas Recycler it reuses the unburnt fumes from the exhaust and pushes them back through the engine to burn again. If this part has failed or has become dirty which is quite often the case on Diesel cars then it would certainly cause the smell in the cab and the ticking.

It's worth mentioning that these can be very expensive around £250 at worst but in most cases you can remove them your self and clean them with carburetter cleaner, don't use anything else though.

Inside the EGR valve is a small sensor not dis similar to that of an air sensor, just spray it with the cleaner leave it to dry naturally and then refit it. if it has worked you will notice the car will feel more responsive to. and the ticking would stop.

Hope this helps
Regards

I Have a ticking sound from under the bonnet and it sounds a bit like i am driving a Transit Van from inside

If its really loud and sounds like a transit then the bottom end is knocking so the egine is pretty much no good.

If its a slight ticking noise higher pitch then its the hydrolic tappets can be fixed but depends how bad they are they might have to be replaced.

Also check the oil level. is it a zetec? petrol or diesel?

95 nissan quest - strong smell of exhaust in the cabin area

The exhaust leak is almost always broken studs on the exhaust manifolds. It makes a tick noise when cold and usually goes away when the engine warms up. After a year or so, the noise doesn't go away.

Your heater-a/c air intake is at the base of the windshield through the screen on the passenger side. WHen the exhaust leaks from the manifold, the exhaust gas gets sucked into the air intake.
You can put the heater in recirc mode and it will draw air in from inside the car instead of though the outside air intake. You can't leave it in recirc for long in winter or your car will get ice or fogging on the windows from too much humidity. Take it off recirc after 10 minutes.
