Question about 2003 Kia Sedona

Power steering problems

I've been having problems with the power steering on my 02 sedona. It comes & goes & the problem is when turning the wheel will become very hard to turn, then go back to normal. There does appear to be a small power steering fluid leaking out of a small metal hose that is located in front of the radiator (I don't know what the part is, but I think that may need to be replaced). It has never been completely out of ps fluid, but has run lower. The place I have the oil changed at says i need a new ps pump & a new rack & pinion (for about $1,000.) I don't know if that is what is needed, but would like to replace the part I described above first. Any idea what it is? Any idea on where to find a diagram of the engine so I can identify it?
Thanks I was driving down the highway at 30 degrees temperatures. I almost had an accident because of the hard steering. Sedona has 95,000 miles. I hope its something minor. I don't see any leaking of the power steering fluid. The container is at max level.

Very common on the Sedonas, the intermediate shaft u-joint becomes corroded from road grime/salt TSB(KT2008101402). It connects the steering wheel to the rack outside the firewall. It will bind and then release, but will work fine for a while, when oiled or soaked with water (while it's raining). The only solution is replacement...easy to do (1/2 hour job for DIY'r). part #0K52Y 32550

Had the entire steering system replaced and still had the problem. Turned out it was the u-joint. My mechanic was so embarrased that he didn't catch it that he replaced it for free!

Had same problum power steering was easy and stiff intermittantly. sprayed u-joint on steering shaft next to firewall. worked to free it up but i will need to replace it. had to crawal under van to get to it. does not look easy unless you have a lift and a full set of tools. I put it on jack stands and turned the steering wheel left and right before i sprayed it, was stiff, went back to normal easy steering after i sprayed it with a lubricunt. hope this helps out.

Folks, this was a $500 win for me. Jacked up the van and sprayed first some wd-40 on the universal joint and then some motor oil. It was like a miracle. CSteering is completely back to normal with just a little lock to lock turning and driving around. The U-joint WAS very cruddy from the road grit and salt. Thanks!

I have the same. I recon it happens only if I do not drive a lot and it is been left in rain over night. Do not know why but if I drive every day it never happens. It is been a year now and it never came back. As my mechanic says LID (let it develop)

I am experiencing the same problem. Will try the lubrication fix before spending a bunch on a new pump, etc.

This is a known problem and has been increasingly noted by sedona owners. Steering shaft becomes corroded making vehicle steer hard. They say due to salt but if you live anywhere it snows you cant avoid it.

  4. Install the new Power Steering pump.
  5. Reconnect the power steering hoses.

  7. Top off with fluid.
  8. Start up the vehicle.

  10. Top off with fluid.
  11. Turn the wheel all the way to the right.

  13. Repeat the last 4 steps until the fluid level doesn't change much, and is topped off.

This sounds like textbook steering rack failure. If the internal seals wear out the rack will leak fluid internally, causing the exact symptoms you're describing. These can be rebuilt, but it's hardly worth the effort. It's less headache and only slightly more expensive to replace it.
