Open Question

I have a charging problem with my 1983 VW polo 1.1 C .The battery discharges I have changed the alternator but to no effect. The charge light doesn't come on when the ignition is switched on without the engine running, any ideas? thanks.

SOURCE: 1992 VW Polo 1.3L Coupe: warning light mystery

Polo Coupe 1043,1992, Will not start, can be bumped started, sometimes!!, theres a strange clicking noise from under the air box, when the ignition is on and sometimes the oil pressure light comes on when the car gets upto temperature, then I lose all power and then the engine cuts out. I've recently changed the dizzy cap, rotor arm and battery, all the leads are new ish along with the spark plugs. The previous owner has changed the head and done all that, leaving much of the engine loom unlagged and bare. Could this cause a problem on some of the electrical systems?

hi from uk check the main lead from battery+positive to the starters solenoid is secure ? also there is a thin wire that also connects to solenoid on a terminal of its own this is the solenoid energizing wire that works starter when key start position is selected if all above is ok? then use a jump lead and connect one end to battery negative post then the other end of lead to a suitable earth point on engine ? then try starting? if it works/starts ? you have a bad earth connection to engine from battery negative lead check the earth lead connection at point on engine is clean/secure ? it usually is secured by bolt at point where engine and transmission connect ? hope this helps?

My 1983 CJ8 has a new battery and a new alternator but still only sends out 12 volts on the voltage meter. The battery does not charge, what's wrong?


Does the battery light work in the dash? Do you have 12 volts to the stator (often marked "S") wire at the alternator when the key is turned on? If no light system will not charge.

Why does my polo engine surge when i put my lights on


May be due to the alternator , have the charging system tested to see if it overcharging and also have the battery tested, heavy draw on the alternator trying to charge the battery will do the suge effect. good day.

2002 kia Rio Altenator not chargeing ( alt light not showing discharge ) Changed alt, Check out put with volt meter still putting out only 12.2 should be 13.8 Alt checked out OK on bench...


Hi, the actual output voltage produced by the alternator will vary depending on temperature and load, but will typically be about 1-1/2 to 2 volts higher than battery voltage. At idle, most charging systems will produce 13.8 to 15.3 volts with no lights or accessories on. This can be measured by connecting the positive (+) and negative (-) test leads of a voltmeter to the battery posts while the engine is running.

Possible cause of the alternator not charging includes Slipping or broken alternator belt, Open diode, Open circuit in stator windings, Open charging circuit, Open field circuit, Worn brushes or slip ring and Defective voltage regulator..

My 1996 vw polo when stationary loses power when using electrical items and can even cut out and does this when driving as though there isnt enough power in it why is this, i no the alternator works


If the alternator works, then why is it behaving this way?
Is there a battery light on the dash?
Are the battery cable ends clean and shiny when removed?
I would have a starting charging system analysis done at Sears, or Walmart, or your local auto parts store.

My vw polo sometimes cuts out with battery light coming on as i slow down. Is it battery, alternator or plugs any thoughts please...


Check your Belts first to see if they are loose, worn or slipping.
Check your Battery Connections. Take off the Cables and clean both the Battery Post and Cables with a Battery Cleaning Brush.
The Battery Starts the vehicle and runs nominal operations.
The Alternator provides the electricity to Run the Engine. It also provides a small trickle charge to the Battery, recharging it.
If the Alternator is failing, it will draw electricity from the Battery, until eventually the Alternator will fail and deplete the Battery, rendering the Battery (and veh) Dead.
A great way to check the Alternator is to:
1) Start the Vehicle.
2) With the Egine Running, Disconnect the Negative Cable from the Battery.
3) If the Engine Dies, then the Alternator is bad and needs to be replaced.
The Last possibility is the Battery is old, losing it's charge, or losing it's capability to be charged. If your Battery has rectangular caps on top, carefully remove one-cap-at-a-time; and using a Ball Float-Bulb Tube Battery Tester check each cell (hole). More than 2-cells (out of 6 cells) below 50% constitutes a new Battery. Also check your Battery Fluid Level. Use DISTILLED WATER only when adding Fluid. Remember that Battery Fluid is highly Acidic and causes burns.

My vw polo keeps cutting out. when it slows down


try cleaning your battery terminals and tightening them. if that doesnt solve the problem your battery or alternator may be dying, some auto parts stores will do a charging system check for free that will tell you if one or the other is bad.

Will not charge


you will get some funny answers from some of these "experts " The symptoms suggest to me with out much doubt that the regulator is not doing its job correctly ,consistently.Iwould take it to an AUTO ELECTRICIAN and get it tested in situ.... there is only 4 things it can be , wireing ---battery---alternator-----regulator and of those the reg. is the only one that chops and changes. it will cost little for a sparky to check the reg ,. AND I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THE OUTCOME

Replaced battery twice/dead cells


More then likely just a fluke on 2 batteries,but i would check the output on the alternator to make sure it is NOT over charging.

Yes, by connecting the charger the wrong way round you have damaged the rectifier in the alternator, now needs a replacement
