Question about Plymouth Cars & Trucks

Battery light is on 98 voyager

The mechanic has checked both battery and alternator and both are fine, but the battery is not being charged. Mechanic says PCM (?) needs to be replaced, does this sound right? I have seen several PCMs being sold on-line and say that I only need to give them my VIN and mileage to program it to my van. Is this a good idea? Can I install it easly by myself? I understand it is located under the fuse block next to the left front fender. I can't spend $600 for the garage to fix. help!

Hi,

There has been known issues with the alternator on several year/versions of this car. If memory serves me right, there was a TSB for the alternator either over or undercharging. The TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) specifies replacing the alternator and re-flashing the PCM.(Powertrain Control Mudule).

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

A lot of Chrysler products have the voltage regulator in the computer. I would check the charging system wiring first for poor connections and if nothing else is found there is nothing else for you to do but change it.

It sounds like you're on the right track with the crank sensor.Does the car have injector pulse? A bad crank sensor will also cause no pulse.

Yes, the power distribution center is under the hood with the fuses and relays, I have seen a lot of problems with the ASR (auto shutdown relay) in these chrysler products.

2004 Chev Avalanche New battery but won't charge.. Starts fine but light says Battery not charging

Dear Joyce,
The "battery not charging" light actually will tell you many things, and that one light is affected by several parts of the car.
If your battery is new, then the light is telling you some other part of the charging system is failing or has failed.
The most common part is the alternator.
The alternator, or the voltage regulator which is built inside the alternator, can both fail, and the light is telling you.
Those need to be checked by a repair man. (mechanic)
If you have no corrosion on the battery terminal, or the wires, or inside the insulation of the wires, the alternator should be your problem.
God bless your efforts.

Emissions System warning keeps coming on. Mechanic & muffler shop disagree.

Start with the first mechanic who replaced the battery and have them check the charging system. (Alternator) They should have done this when changing a battery, to rule that out as a problem in the first place. Explain the problems you have been having, as a bad charging system can cause all sorts of electronics problems and have them check the engine codes and have them explain what they are.
You could also go back to the muffler shop and tell them their sensor replacement did not fix the problem and have them correct their work.

I have a 1998 Plymouth Grand Voyager SE and I just replaced Alternator, battery, PCM. The alternator is not receiving enough power to charge the battery. Only putting out 11.58. What could be the p

First, you state "the battery is only getting 11.58". This implies the alternator IS charging albeit too low. I would connect the voltmeter to the main terminal on the alternator and take a reading before starting the motor, then again with the motor running at around 1500 RPM (fast idle). This will indicate whether the alternator is working or not.

Getting back to the ign light, does it remain at the same brilliance before starting the engine and after?

You are describing a situation that would be solved by a replacement alternator. You say yours is fine ... I think I'd be inclined to have it checked by another mechanic.

The battery light comes on when you are using more power than you are making. Your car died because it had no electricity to run the spark plugs, the electric fuel pump, the computer, the lights, the instruments, the cooling fans, the security system, the automatic locks, the heater/AC - ventilation system, and other electrical powered devices required to make a modern car run.

In the good old days, a battery would run a car for weeks, in the day time (no lights) - with the only power requirement was the starter and the ignition. Today - cars are power hungry.

Yes, your car ran out of power last night and this morning it strarted fine and ran for a while. That was because your battery has SOME capability to recover overnight. Don't push your luck. Have an evaluation done by a professional mechanic.

possible voltage regulator is faulty (in the alternator) and boiling the battery. Since the battery has sulphuric acid in it, that would give you the sulpher smell. Get your mechanic to test the voltage/amps output from the alternator.
