OK,
You have 2 possible fixes. First, a shot of penetrating oil into the lock assembly is a good start. Try wiggling the key around. This has happened to my car in the past. When the lock starts to get worn, it can sometimes allow the lock cylinder to turn before the key is actually all the way in. When in a hurry, it may have been turned too soon, and when this happens, the tumblers can get stuck and not release the key, even though it can be turned. If the oil did not help, next I suggest a light to medium tap on the key using a light hammer ( or a standard hammer with a light touch...) tap the end of the key and drive the key all the way into the lock assembly. If this is the problem, the key will seat itself all the way into the lock and will probably allow the tumblers to then release the key. If this does not work, disassemble the steering column covers and plan to replace the lock assembly. Most are available in the local parts store....with a new key. Good luck, and always make sure the key is all the way in before turning to avoid this happening in the future.

Sometimes if your shifter is not all the way in park, it may act like that. Move your shifter to reverse, neutral, and then make sure it is in park. You may have to play gently with it a bit.....but this may allow you to get the key out......Joe

Sounds like the battery or the ignition switch has gone bad. The key won' release until the shift lock solenoid is energized to allow the key to turn all the way back.

I have 98 grand prix ignition is stuck in start had to pull fuel pump fuse but cant shut car off lights are still on

Suggest disconecting the battery. Then you can work on the problem. it is not clear if the issue is the key stuck in the start position in the iginition switch or if the starter motor is stuck (running) after the car starts. If it the starter motor is running... Time for a new starter. If it is the ignition switch, try
pushing the key in and turning back off. Still stuck? Try pulling pn the key and turning off. Either way, if it is the key, yime for a new ignition switch.

I have towed several of these with same problem. Sounds like to me it needs to go back in for the ignition switch again. Unless it's not going into park. If it's not going into park it would be a shift linkage issue and needs to be adjusted. Chris J.C. Towing & Recovery

Ignition key gets stuck and car won't start

you might need to replace ignition key cylinder assy and replace current key, now, sometimes if this is a automatic transmission it might have problem with shifter interlock cable try moving shifter from park to first and back to park and try removing key again, but if key gets stuck and car won't start, does the key turns? does the engine cranks? are you using the correct key?

Ignition locked will not turn

easiest way to handle this problem is as you turn the key turn the steering wheel back and forth not real hard bust firm and try and turn the key foward and back at the same time. usually what happens is the little detente inside the column gets stuck just right and stops the tumbler from moving
