Short circuit; car won't shift out of park

The brake lights and hazards do not work; the fuse is blown. When I tried to replace the fuse, the next one blew immediately. It seems to me that the switch that lets the car know that the brake has been applied is not working, due to a short circuit somewhere, and the car will not shift out of park.

You will need to download the cars wiring diagram's or find access to the factory repair manuals and trace down the shorted wire using the diagram's as a guide, this is a very difficult job and may take many hours. You can buy access to the factory service manuals here

I would look for a wiring short in the trunk at the taillamp area, or, inspect the sockets for the taillamp bulbs for corrosion. In any case, you have a short circuit in the trunk area, also check the wire that comes from the body & goes up the trunk hinge on the driver side; that wire may be chafed, and it may be shorting out. First things first: I suggest taking your truck to a mechanic or an auto parts store that can do a diagnostics test done. If any fuses or relays are blown, this test should bring up any codes that would indicate any type of malfunctions.

The shift lever being locked: In newer vechicles, the brake pedel, as you know must be pressed in order for the transmission to be put into gear. There should be a sensor on the transmission that runs in cahoots with the brakes. This sensor tells the computer what gear the transmission is in. It is very possible that at the last time you put the vehicle in Park, that the switch had it's final moment of ability. If the sensor is in fact useless, it may be the reason the transmission is locked into Park. It may be the reason why the brake lights aren't working; and why the brake lights fuse is blowing. Also, check all relays, (can be tested with a fuse tester) and make sure all relays are good as well. Make sure also that the light sockets for the brake lights, tail lights, back up lights, and front running and blinker lights are in good condition. One faulty socket, can cause more than one bulb to blow, or cause fuses and relays to blow as well. Follow the wiring for the brake lights for as far as you can to ensure there is no damage (melted, broken, etc.). This could also affect fuses. This truck I see is barely 5 years old, but you'd be surprised how quickly parts and wiring and such will go bad, or wear out and/or just quit working.

If the transmission sensor is not the problem, and all fuses and relays are good. tranny fluid is full, check the linkage under the truck. It may be jammed somehow, or stuck. On the transmission, where the lever inserts, there is a seal - inside that seal, there is like a gear that the lever pushes in order to shift from gear to gear etc. You may need to have that checked out to make sure it's not broken inside. If your fluid is low, or empty, you may have froze up your transmission, however, you most likely would have been seeing large amounts of fluid in the frequent places you park. Another think to check is your differentials. Make sure the fluid is full in each, as well as the seals not leaking. The seal sits just inside the inner most part of the pumpkin (differential ball) where the yoke is inserted. Maybe you have just locked up the rear driveline. Check the seal on the front end of the driveline as well, (goes into the rear of the transmission (yoke). Check your U-Joints as well, making sure they are intact, tight. It may be a good idea to have them replaced if they look supsicous in any way.

These are all the things I can think of that would make your truck be stuck in park, and make your lights not work, and blow fuses.

SOURCE: brake switch fuse keeps blowing

I Have the same problem with my 97 ford keeps blown fuse 15 amp,when I step on the brake pedal,to shift out of park it blows the fuse.can someone help me out what to look for.I replaced the switch on brake pedal that wasn't it.

I have no brake lights,low beams and wont shift out of park.


Sounds like a short to ground in the brake light harness. Or one of the brake light sockets.
You should never use a fuse higher than the recommended as that will allow a fire.
You may have to trace the wiring going to the back to find the short.
I would take the bulbs out first and use a 20amp circuit breaker instead of fuses until you find the short.

2003 crown victoria won't come out of park


Had a similar problem. Solved it two ways first place key in the 3 position move gear to N then start and it will shift easily. Second solution check brake light fuse, it is probably blown replace it and gears will shift OK.

Brake lights won't come on after changing brake booster on 97 gmc 1500. Also won't shift into gear.


check for a bad brake light fuse! if not the fuse, the brake light switch operates brake lights and if bad you will not be able to shift it out of park, as well as the brake lights not coming on.! because you have to put foot on brake to do so. if bad switch, it wont let it out of park. it could be just out of adjustment also!! good-day !

Tail lights, parking lights and dashboard lights on 2004 grand marquis are inoperative. Headlights, turn-signal lights, brake lights, hazard lights, back-up lights all work


Tail lights, parking lights and dash lights are all on the same circuit...I'd go to the fuse panel under the dash and check the fuse for those lights....usually referred to as accessory lighting in the owners manual and is usually a 10A fuse.

I do not know for sure, but it sounds like you have a short some where. You might want to start looking for bare wires around that tail light that first started giving you all of the problems. I hope this helps you solve the problem

2008 Saturn Vue Stuck In Park. The car starts fine however when you try to shift out of park the shifter is locked up and won't budge. You have to restart the car multiple times to get the shifter...


these have a safety system so the shifter won`t go into any gear unless the brake is pushed(indicating someone sitting in the drivers seat),if the brake lights aren`t working this indicates that the fuse that operates the shift lock solenoid and brake lights is not working and needs replacing.check the fuses and replace the fuse and things will probably return to normal.

GEAR SHIFT STUCK IN PARK HAVE NO BRAKE LIGHTS


check the fuses as if the brake light fuse is blown it won`t allow the shifter to move out of park.it has a shift interlock system so the gear shift won`t accidentally be moved out of park by mistake.

Column shifter would not shift. Brake lights aren't working due to blown fuse. When trying to replace the fuse the fuse gets real hot and melts.


you have a short circuit in the brake light circuit or the shift interlock circuit.

Look under the dash at the switch on the brake pedal arm and see if it is burned looking or the wiring is frayed and shorting out.

For emergency, there is an over ride for the shift interlock so you can get car to a shop. Look up shift interlock in index of owner manual for over ride procedure.

I think you turn key to OFF position, step on brake, and pull shifter into neutral. Start car in Neutral, put in gear, drive away.

Remember, you have no bake lights.

Also, check brake light bulbs and sockets in tail lights. A bulb or socket could be shorted.

Dash lights out brake lights out no hazards and stuck in park and a connecter clicks behind the steering wheel when trying to shift and the #1 fuse blows when inserting a new fuse!?!?


You have a short circuit in the circuits that are protected by the fuse. Fuses are NEVER the CAUSE of a problem with an electrical circuit. Blown fuses are ALWAYS the RESULT of a problem with an electrical circuit. That fuse has given its life to stop your vehiclefrom burning to the ground. Replacing the blown fuse without locating and repairing the short will only cause another fuse to give its life to keep your vehicle from roasting and the first fuse will have died in vain. Each time this is repeated, the wires in the system get hot and weakened. Finally, there will be the poor fuse that cannot jump on the grenade quick enough to save its comarades and POOF! The whole vehicle will light up like a bad dream from "The Abominable Torch Visits Fireworks Factory".

The system needs to be diagnosed using the proper test equipment and the wiring diagrams for the vehicle. Nobody online can tell you what is shorting. It could be anything that has anything to do with that fuse. (Hence, the need for wiring diagrams)

Fuse blows ,abs light on ,can not shift car out of park.


You cannot shift out of park because there is an electric fault on the brake lamp system. The fuse is blowing because there is a short in the circuit.Firstly, remove the connector to each rear lamp unit, replace the fuse and try, if this works and you can put into gear, then the problem is with the rear lamps. Check the stop lamp bulbs and holders, if they are blown or corroded contacts . clean contacts and replace as necessary.
If it did not work, then remove the contact at the brake pedal switch and try with a new fuse, again if it works then the problem is with the contacts or switch, clean or replace as necessary. If it still did not work, then there must be a short in the installation, in which case you need to go to an auto electrician to find it.
