Only if the starter grinds when starting. They are used to align the gear on the starter with the flywheel

I have changed the starter 3 times there we're no shims but it stil kicks when I first start it . So I thought maybe with the rebuilt starter I had to put some.I also checked the cap for cracks , nothing. I really don't know what to do , but send it ti GM. That's going to an arm and a leg. Thank you for your help.

SOURCE: 1999 Chevy Blazer Starter

the starter is located on the passenger side lower motor. it has two bolts in it that hold it in place. it actually goes through a hole/slot in the transmission to the flex plate.

1st. disconnect the negative cable on the battery.
2nd. raise the vehicle safely and place a jack stand under the vehicle out of your way but near where you will be working(for safety).
3rd. remove the two bolts that hold the starter in place.
4th. remove the wires from the back of the starter.
5th. install in reverse order of above.

note: there may be little plates between the starter and the mounting points called shims. if there are then make sure you put them back.

SOURCE: 1998 chevy blazer 4x4 engine will not start no sound at all

Had the same issue, except mine just quit in the middle of an intersection. It was my fuel pump. Check out your fuel filter first, though, as I have heard those can cause the same problems and you might get lucky and only need to replace that. If not, fuel pump is a likely culprit.

Good luck!

SOURCE: Wiring Diagram 1998 Chevy S-10 starter replacement

The starter has one large cable from the battery positive, and a wire that goes to the solenoid (Part of the starter) that becomes hot when the key ignition is turned to start. This also passes through the neutral safety switch. (So it wont start in gear) Not sure if this is what you need, a little vague.

If the battery is ok - the starter might need some shimms..

I have a 2001 Olds Intrigue, I replaced the starter and it still grinds. What could this be? Single Lady

Did you replace the starter yourself or did someone else do it? Sounds to me that someone forgot to put the shimms back in, they go between the starter and the engine block where it bolts up. Without the shimms the starter will be to close and the teeth on starter drive will not engage teeth on flywheel.

Starter problems

is this a screeching sound of it is then, you may need to adda shim between starter and the mounting surface. Double check all wiring to starter and make sure they are not broken especially wire to the bendix of the starter (starter selonoid). Get back top me if you need more help. Thanks for using FIX YA
