  • if you go to turn the engine over and all the reds are off its more than likely one of the computers has become faulty in the car to check it is quite easy you can get some one to come out with a tech 2 diagnostic computer to see if they can read it.Jul 30, 2014
  • if the reds come on it could be a faulty starter motor or the battery could have dropped a cell to check the battery you will need a multi meter and when you turn the key the voltage will drop a fully charged batter should read around 12.5 volts if it drops when you go to start the car lower than 11.48 volts means the battery is no longer able to hold the correct charge
  • to check if the fuel pump is working is very simple when you turn the car to the reds you can hear the fuel pump start and build pressure up in the injectors line.
  • majority of Holden vt commodore problems relating to the car starting should always be checked in a simple order
  • how old is the battery is it holding charge?
  • dose the starter motor engage?
  • also if the at starter motor engages with a fully charged battery and the fuel pump works then another thing you might want to look at is the alternator normally when the alternator rectifier diode becomes faulty it will drain the battery meaning you will spend every day jump starting your car

The starter won't crank. If nothing happens when you turn the ignition key to the "Start" position, it means that the starter motor doesn't turn over the engine. Most commonly this could be caused by a dead battery; here is How to check the battery. ... The starter motor itself or a starter solenoid could be bad.13 Aug 2013

Wat kind of v8 is suitable for a 1997 3.8 v6 holden commodore excutive

your VT /VX came out with a V8 engine
you need the engines ECU and the V8 gearbox
manual diff ratios can be optional

1997 -2002 engines will bolt in

you could go up the next commy V8 model it has roller rockers
you can have a v6 or v8 supercharged if you like

once all bolted in you need a mutt 2 diagnostic reader to reset all the keys and modules and immobilizer for it to start and run

Check starter motor, give it a smack with a hammer, might turn over after that, this is a sign the stater motor brushes are most likely worn out. Or and check ignition switch below the ignition barrel.

I can hear the fuel pump running, lights are on, but won't start the car.

First make sure you have good battery connections. A poor connection will give enough power to turn on head lights but not turn on starter motor. Clean the connections and ensure they are tightened.

If connections are good, check voltage of battery. It should be at least 12 volts.

If battery voltage is low, either charge the battery, or attempt to jump start the car (red to positive terminals, black to negative terminals; attached positive first, prefer to attach negative terminal to a good metal location other than the negative terminal on the battery).

If the starter motor is visible, try tapping lightly with a mallet to free it up. This may or may not work depending on the problem. If the car starts, replace the starter motor anyway or it will strand you again.

Most cars have a starter relay and a fuse for the ignition. Do a Google search on the internet for your model of car, or look in your owners manual to find the location of the solenoid and/or fuse. Replace the fuse if it's burned out. Note that a shorted starter motor could cause the fuse to burn out, so replacing the fuse may not fix the problem. Suspect a shorted starter motor or wire if the fuse burns out again. You may need some professional assistance at this point to check the solenoid.

If the solenoid is bad, it is usually replaced along with the starter. Remove starter motor/solenoid and take to an Autozone or Oreilly or equivalent and have them check its functionality. Be sure to disconnect the battery's negative terminal before removing the starter motor.

If the starter is good, then your problem is likely either your car's security system (check if security light is flashing if you have such) or check the ignition switch. If you have a mechanic friend, see if he can bypass the ignition switch and get the starter motor to turn over.

Poor electrical connections or a bad battery or a bad starter motor/solenoid are the most likely culprits.
