Question about 1999 Dodge Ram

1 Answer

I have a 1987 ford-150 straight 6 engine in it, only has 71,000 miles on it and recently i had a problem with the truck shutting down and if you gave it a few minutes it would fire back up so i had the ignition module and starter solenoid replace..thought the problem was fixed and went to pick up my truck from garage and went to start it..it started but the engine was racing to high the rpms were at 3,000

    what is pre ignition?

  • shdr05 Jan 04, 2009

why is it that once i had tried to turn motor off with the ignition the motor stayed running what would cause that is it getting a over load of gas or timing is off or distributor needs adjusting?

  • shdr05 Jan 04, 2009

when this problem happened i did not smell any large amount of fuel or fumes or any gas leaking on ground this problem has me paused i am going to lean towards the fact my machanic might have changed the module but did not checked to see if he might of off centered the distributor and of course the timing being off and not matching up with the distributor since they both run off the crackshaft..

You probably need a tune up or timing might have been changed which would alter the rpms. Replacing the module can erquire moving the distridutor and it may not have been returned to the same position. I have experienced same problem.

I believe you are referring to firing prior to the intake valves fully closing which would cause backfiring thru carb.,..

  • idare_ya Jan 04, 2009

definatly needs adjusting! check vacume lines as well it could be just idle needs adj but the recent work as wel as symptoms point to timing those engins like 89 n up fuel as well make sure when u tune it you run the same octane fuel as you usually do or as recommended by mfgr
If this helps dont forget to rate the help Ill check back in a few days to see if you are all set

How do you change frost plugs in a 1987 ford f150 2wd 4speed manual transmission? the motor is a 300 straight 6

First question would be, is the current block heater not working. If so, all you need to do is take out the existing plug and replace. You shouldnt need to pop out any other plugs.

Firing orde ford 6 cyl f-150 truck distributer to spark plugs

you didn't say if you have the straight 6 or v 6.But i'll give the order for both.
The 4.9L straight 6 is 1-5-3-6-2-4----------- distributor rotor turning clockwise, and #1 plug is the first plug.
On the 3.0 and 4.2 V6 engines is 1-4-2-5-3-6-------#1 plug is the first plug on driver side---- facing engine.
