Question about 2002 Volkswagen Jetta TDI

2002 jetta tdi lost power and produced a lot of smoke from under?

Was just driving and car lost power and produced a lot of smoke from under the car. what could be the problem?? car has 190,000 miles, but got a new timing chain and water pump at 180,000 miles.

When my 02 jetta did this, i had to replace the mass air flow sensor. hope this helps

sounds like the turbo could be going bad, did you check air filter? Black smoke generally means your not getting enough air to burn fuel.

have you tried at all to reset the program of the automatic transmission ? Always remember that even a simple connector been removed for second and re connected always needs adaptation before starting the car VW. Try to do the automatic transmission with adaptation.

Loss of power. Runs, motor sounds ok, top end is about 65, have to down shift to go up hills. Smokes when put under load. Replaced the fuel filter, not the problem.


Oil and carbon tend to build up, creating restrictions in the intake manifold. Symptoms will be loss of power (sometimes severe) and poor fuel economy.

Mass airflow sensors commonly go bad on these vw's and can give you lots of low power problems. If the car has been tuned up and not running poorly I would start there.

Was on freeway and lost power. trouble restarting but no power and a lot of black smoke and some slight knocking. Left two black soot marks under car at rear and behind turbo or exhaust manifold, car has...


If you have a lot of black smoke then its over fueling getting to much diesel to the cylinder's. Sounds like an injector problem with the slight knocking noise. Che ck the return pipes are not blocked. If the smoke is dark brown then this is a problem with the valves on the intake manifold which control's the intake of exhaust emmisions.

valve seals are leaking oil or the valve guides are worn allowing oil to slip past the seals.
