SOURCE: how to replace a serpentine belt on a 2004

  1. Lift the car so you can work from underneath when needed.
  2. Disconnect the battery . Just to be safe.
  3. Take the serpentine belt off.
  4. Remove the alternator.
  5. Remove the A/C compressor. (You can do it without removing, but it's a royal PITA... LOL) Don't unhook the lines, just unbolt and move out of the way.
  6. Remove the worn tensioner from t he block. (You need to unbolt the pulley first to get to all the tensioner bolts)

In the trunk, in the rear corners, you'll see some plastic "caps" with tabs on them, similar to wing nuts. Remove those, and the taillight comes right off the back of the car. That will allow you to replace the bulbs.

How to fix a leak that seems to be coming from the water pump or A/C?

No, that sounds like the water pump pulley. Loosen the 4 bolts with the serp. belt still on, then remove belt, and remove the pulley and the 4 bolts. Drain the coolant, and now you can remove and replace the water pump. It is not fixable, it must be replaced. Be sure and clean the mating surface of old gasket material and dirt, grease, etc. YouTube should have lots of videos on water pump replacement, maybe one for Aleros.

I put a new water pump on my 2004 oldsmobile alero and it is making a bad squealing first it was running fine but now is trying to over heat and i dont think the thermostat is opening because

Not good. Pull the serpentine belt and try to spin the water pump by hand.If it won't turn, it's dead, replace it and the thermostat and try again. If it spins freely, something else is causing the belt to slip. Either the tensioner is worn out and needs replaced, or something else is binding the belt up. Not that difficult to figure out.
These cars are notorious for holding air in the cooling system. When not run, the air usually lives in the heater core. If you keep an eye on the coolant level and don't have any leaks, the air will eventually burp itself out if you top up the coolant tank when it gets low.

How much will it cost to have my water pump replaced in my 2000 Alero. I am getting a quote of over $1,000.00 dollars because of the position the water pump is placed.

Your 2000 Olds Alero should have the 3400 V-6 engine...the water pump sells for about $45. The change out does not require the removal of any major components...(ie engine mounts etc.) You can loosen the serpentine belt to gain full access to the water pump bolts...Yes you will lose some anti-freeze and need to refill after replacing the pump...antifreeze $8.50 per gallon...recommend you use antifreeze "Good for All Models" as it has proven to be the best for longevity...Hope this helps...Your estimate is way to high...A shop will mark up the part slightly, and charge for labor...This job should be completed in less than 1 labor hour...$55. to $75. per hour depending on your location...PLEASE shop around if you cannot do this one by yourself:)

There is a pulley out of alignment. Only 1/8th inch out will cause a serpentine to sqeak.
