Clutch fan don't turn off

    Are you referring to an oil filled radiator cooling fan? These don't stop completely, but are controlled by the viscosity of the oil within the fan's main body. The oil viscosity is controlled by the heat of the air flowing over the fan's body.

Electric Fan(s) not working, Checking the fan(s), relay, fuse and engine temperature sensor's.
Verify that the fans work by unplugging them and run jumper wires to the fan(s) from the battery. If they run, your problem lies elsewhere. If either does not run, it's the motor.
Next thing to check is for power at the fan connectors. You have to be cautious doing this because the engine needs to be running and warm if not almost hot, and the A/C also needs to be on. (Both must be on and running for the duration of this checklist.) The A/C fan is on the passenger side and should come on almost the instant the A/C is turned on. It is also the secondary engine cooling fan and should cycle on and off in relation to engine temperature. Use a test light to probe the two wires on each fan. If you find power the fan motor(s) is/are probably bad. If there is no power to fans, roll up your sleeves!

The temperature switch is usually located above the oil filter. If the dash gage is working, its probably OK. Next is the Fan Control Temperature Sensor, located IN or CLOSE to the thermostat housing. You will find out if it is working later is this checklist. I just wanted you to know where it is. Next is the relays and fuse's. Usually located in the engine compartment on the passenger side power distribution box. You will need to remove anything over the cover to open it. If the fuses are OK, tap on the relays or pull them out and push back in. If the fans are still not running, pull a relay and probe the socket terminals for power. Two of the terminals should have power, usually criss-cross from each other. One hot terminal is battery power, and the other is the "signal" voltage which triggers the relay to send 12V battery power to the fan. This signal voltage comes from the sensor at the thermostat. If only one terminal has power, then I would replace the thermostat sensor if not both.

How do i remove the fan and pulley on a 1987 ford ranger 2.9 v-6?


The question is: How remove clutch in order to remove fan mounted on its engine-side face.
  • Generally, the clutch drive half shaft must be uncoupled from coolant pump (impeller drive) half shaft using special wrench kit available as loaner from AutoZone (free with $79 approx deposit).
  • Best done after shroud & radiator remove after coolant drained.
  1. Uncouple coolant pump and fan clutch drive shaft(s) as follows:
    1. span across combo-pulley-sheaves-unit mounting bolt heads with large tool kit wrench, and
    2. span inline clutch coupling nut with small tool kit wrench. Then,
    3. turn small wrench (and coupling nut) CW while resisting with large wrench (CCW) to turn coupling nut until disengaged from coolant pump drive shaft.
  2. Remove fan/clutch assembly.
  3. Note direction of mounted fan hub and fan blades orientation to ensure proper re-assembly.
  4. On rear of clutch assy, remove 4 bolts to disengage and remove fan.
  5. Assemble new fan to clutch (or, preferably, new clutch and new fan) using new bolts and washers provided with fan.
  6. Couple fan-clutch assy to coolant pump drive shaft as per opposite of uncoupling step 1, above. (Turn inline nut CCW to tighten...30 ft-lb.
  7. Check that fan can be hand turned...CW.)
  8. Rest shroud over and onto fan.
  9. Replace radiator; remount shroud; reclamp hoses, and refill and air purge cooling system.

Compressor and fans do not turn on until rev engine


I passed this question the first time I read it, so I will take a stab at it now.
The fans don't come on until the compressor has pumped the freon pressure up to say 150 or 200 psi. And the compressor clutch has to have voltage to engage the clutch.
I wonder if the clutch is going and needs 14 volts instead of 12 to engage ? Or the relay that powers the clutch ?
Speeding up the engine would increase voltage from the alternator.
This is assuming the serpentine belt is tight and everything else is working correctly.
I think I would swap the relay with another and put a meter on that circuit to the ac clutch to see what it takes to engage it.

My ac only blows hot air and wont take a charge


Quick test. Find the receiver drier there should be a sensor on it this is a pressure sensor the compressor will not cut in if low on gas cause the lubricant flows through the system with the gas. Unplug sensor & bridge the wires in the plug. With car running & A/C on your A/C clutch should now cut in. This will test the compressor & clutch but don't leave it bridged or you will destroy the compressor. Otherwise could be switch etc but start with that test. As for not accepting gas I don't know Blockage maybe? bad valve?

Where's the fuse for the AC on 98 Olds 88?


So what does the fuse that blows, protect?

You need a wiring diagram & start to test
the components most likely to cause a high
current draw & blown fuse.

Don't keep replacing it.

You know the fan control circuit works, but the
compressor doesn't stay on. Did you monitor
the compressor as the fuse blew?

May have a module for compressor & fan
If so one side failed
The compressor clutch could be bad

could be fuel pump,check for fuel see if fuel pump supplying fuel and you are getting spark.make sure ignition timing is correct and the idle speed setting correct check the under hood emissions information label.also check engine make sure engine not over heating check cooling fan clutch see if cooling fan clutch is okay by turning it by hand if engine is hot cooling fan should have resistance if engine is hot, if cooling fan feel loose no resistance the fan clutch is bad.

My jeep is overheating when stop i change the fan relay head gasket put new radiator and keep overheating when i stop in the lights


It's easy to overlook but a bad clutch fan will cause overheating in stop & go traffic, while you're idling or out on the trail at low speeds. When you rev the motor, you should be able to hear the clutch fan 'roar' up to speed slightly behind your engine speed. It's a noticeable sound when it's fixed, but ya don't pay any attention to it if it has slowly gone bad... other than wondering why you're overheating.
CHEAP "FIX" #1: If your clutch fan is known to be bad, you can remove it and drill two small holes in it where the internal spring is located and put two sheet metal screws in to make it 'lock up' all the time. Put these 180* apart, directly across from one another to keep things balanced. Upside: .20 cents to fix. Downside: Reduced gas milage with it going all the time.
CLUTCH FAN REPLACEMENT UPGRADE: Pull out the clutch fan and use it to enhance your garage wall. Instead of putting in another clutch fan, you can free up some horsepower when you install another electric fan for primary cooling

93 Dynasty 3.3, driving today and the air bag light was staying on then I noticed my windows would not roll down nor would the heater fan run then the car overheated. I had replaced the cooling fan relay...


With a car that old & that many problems,
I would get rid of it

It needs too much work & I don't sense that
is your area of expertise

When you start becoming a butcher & wiring things,
instead of repairing them properly,it is time to quit
& get something else

Serpentine belt gets shredded in the fan every month or so. We have replaced the tensioner pulley twice, and we don't know what the problem is


look at the fan clutch, make sure it is good and your fan is secure. also is the fan clutch coming on when needed? where are you getting your tensioners? try an OEM unit from the dealer.

Need to know fuse location for ac on 2000 ford expedition


This is kind of an open question because I don't know if your fan (blower motor) is not coming on or if the fan is working and it's just not cold which means the A/C compressor clutch isn't engaging. I am giving you the most common and that is the compressor. In your power distribution box located in the engine compartment (see picture of location below) is the A/C cltch fuse and the A/C cltuch relay itself. The A/C clutch fuse is located in the number 13 position and should be a 15 amp fuse (see other picture below for layout of fuse panel). then in that same box in the number 204 position is the A/C clutch relay itself. If it's the fan not blowing there are many possible fuses for it and like I said i wasn't sure what you meant by A/C fuse. All of this should be in your owners manual if you have one.
