Question about 1986 Suzuki Samurai

1 Answer

I can't get my 1986 Samurai to idle below 2000 rpm with a weber carb. it won;t even run!

Foot off the gas the engine immediately shuts off! There are so many hoses on the intake manifold I get dizzy! The factory manual shows none of them.

Also, Weber carbs have a very small orfice in the low speed jet and will plug easily if dirt gets in causing no idle

There are SEVERAL diagrams which would be much easier if I just made you a PDF to send to you. Email me at csautomotivecars@att.net with your vehicle information and remind me that you need the vacuum diagrams and I will be happy to email them to you. No there wouldn't be a cost for it. There is a size linit to post a picture on fixya and it wouldn't be detailed enough that small since there are quite a bit of them...

If you have a weber on it ALL the vacuum lines need to be plugged with the exception of the distributer line. That is the only vacuum line on the weber should be on the side of the choke just below it. All other lines get capped.

SOURCE: car idles low, stalls after start

Common issue at the shop (i'm a ford technician), here is what I do to correct it.
Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls at stops and low erratic idle speed and rough idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

SOURCE: 87 samurai bolt torque specs for engine

The haynes book is not recommended since there are numerous mistakes and they still will not update. One of the biggest is the firing order.

The factory service manual is the only way to go.

Head bolts - 46 - 50.5 lbs (there is an order sequence for the bolts)

Intake & exhuast manifolds- 13.5 - 20 lbs

Flywheel - 41.5 - 47 lbs

Clutch cover - 13.5 - 20 lbs

It could be a spark plug, plug wire, or a coil. Sometimes thay break down intermittently. If it needs a tuneup, that would be the first thing to do.

SOURCE: Suzuki Samurai Hitachi carb manual

Car 1994 Suzuki Vitara (Sidekick), 3 door, carburetor, petrol.
I need a hose diagram for the carburetor. The person who owned it before made a mess of the system so its not throttling steadily. Hoses are blocked off and I suspect hoses re routed.

Help me please!

SOURCE: I have a 1987 Susuki Samurai, 1.3 engine. Cold

Yeah it sounds kinda high. There is no adj except for the idle screw on the throttle, the computer does the rest, if it has one. If not, then you can adjust it some how. If carbureted, check for 2 little screws in the front, and check the choke, If throttle body, then just the idle screw, the idle should be around 1000. Hope this helps.

I have a Weber carb on a Suzuki samurai. Runs ok but continues to try to run after turning off

this is caused by mixture getting past the idle and being sucked into the combustion chambers and being ignited by the hot spots and combustion pressures
Very common on early english cars and some american cars
The japanese carbies had a solenoid valve that fitted into the idle circuit so that when the ignition was turned off , the solenoid closed off that idle circuit and prevented the problem
you may have to "play " with the idle mixture screws to get a better mix so that the mixture is too rich to run on or change the weber to a model that has the solenoid shut off

When i come to a stop the car wants to die unless u keep ur foot on the gas

Hi Wendi:
If the engine runs fine except when you don't have your foot on the gas, maybe the idle stop needs to be adjusted. With the engine off, have someone step on the gas pedal while you look at the linkage at the carb. There should be a plate with a screw in it that keeps the butterfly valve from closing completely. This can be adjusted with the engine running. (SAFETY FIRST - MOVING PARTS CAN BITE)
If the engine will only run at not nice too high RPM, chances are that the idle jet in the carb is plugged, and a carb cleaning and possibly overhaul may be needed.

Smell gas going down hill in my suzuki samuri 1989

most cars this old , the CAT is missing rodded out or dead.
and all cars with no cat stink. all ! and lots of CO. (deadly)
tune it out doors.

the carb must be tuned to burn all the fuel.
and webers are the hardest to tune. (But run better than all, once tuned) the Harley CV carb is vastly more easy to tune. FYI.
we use a wide band oxy sensor tool to tune carb now 100x more easy.
the tool was $1200 but not $140
what engine is there, G13? (most now, are upgraded)
the G13 has a mech, distributor. and the advancing weights must work like new. (not stuck"rust")
the dizzy must advance fully or carb tuning is a head to wall slam.
if the dizzy fails, it will not burn all the fuel. and will stink bad.

So using a timing light check the full advance.
the sammi FSM is free.
here it is.

weber 101 tuning is beyond the scope of any post here.

Car turns off at stop sing or stop lights only at night with the head lights on.

turns off? what turns off HL or engine? try to be exact in statements of car systems. engine , lighting etc.
is the 87 engine still stock , most are not.
we run ours with webers. my boss runs Harely CV carbs.
is the cars Carb still a Suzuki stock carb>?
this very old car is usually never stock, as carb parts for this old dog
are near hens teeth available. so ??????
post a photo of engine and in 1second flat WE sell that that.

here is my guess.
the ENGINE RPM is way below 800 RPM'
if not the charge system is bad.
is the charge lamp on key on then off running?
also all old suzuki's love to stall with stuck open EGR valve
ever clean that valve?
or read the FSM

http://www.fixkick.com/sammi-stuff/index.html

btw lights turn off
engines stall.
engines crank ,start, run or stall. (these terms work best )
for clarity and context.

88 suzuki samurai I have has a weber carb with water choke. I notice that the hose from carb has a bulge in it. I dont know the diameter of the hose coming off the carb to purchace another one? Also, i...

custom carb .
who knows what you have, even diff, engine.
remove hose, measure it. if not up to measuring, take it to any shop
and they will tell you, what I.D it is. (most hoses are marked)
the jerking can be many things.
seems to me its the DASH pot effect.
on custom carbs there is no dash pot, so when you drop the hammer (throttle ) you get 100% closes throttle and next snapping
the orig, carb had a dash pot, now missing.
one trick is to run high idle speeds, or back off throttle slower driving.
or add a dashpot.
it simple delays throttle snap back.
sure the timing changes rpm that is why.
when tuning any carb, you set timing first , then tune carb to that.
stock timing and stock advance if motor is still stock,
you dizzy has stock advancing weights and springs, i test those first.
cheers.

Car will not start without pressing gas pedal to keep idle speed up. If I keep idle at 900 RPM or higher it runs as long as foot is on gas pedal. It then stalls out when I take foot off gas pedal. No...

Have the idle bypass valve checked, also called idle air control valve.
If that valve is stuck in the closed position, it's not allowing the fuel to bypass the throttle plate to keep it idling, resulting in stalling, but will keep engine running if the pedal is pushed down.

Under 2000 rpms runs bad/hesitates/check engine light

This IAC valve runs only when your foot is off the gas pedal. Mainly to keep the engine from stalling and keeping it at a safe RPM. If it is running bad under 2000RPM, more than likely its the IAC valve or a vacuum leak. Clean or replace the IAC valve....Hopefully this helps!!

Injection is efficient, low maintenence, still runs at steep angles. Stock carb is very complicated to work on, if I had a stock carb with issues I would replace it with a weber. Still, I prefer injected

Hi,you can try this , take your plugs off ,clean them good or replace them, leave them out for about thirty minutes so the combustion chambers will dry out ,install your plugs and try to get it runing ,if it start and does it again you may have to much gas from your carb , (I hope this will help you)..........
