When i try to start my dodge 600 all i hear is a type of clunking noise without the car firing up. Is this my starter that has failed or is it possibly my alternator

Its faulty starter issue.when the starter gets faulty it will make such noise.the other possibility can be starter not getting power from battery. So get the battery voltge checked. It should be 12 volts. Also check battery to starter connections.Remove and reconnect the connections, then check. If still the same problem, then its faulty starter issue. And the starter needs to be replaced. Replaced battery, went to start it and it wouldnt, turned key and all it does is click once, motor does not turn over and im pretty sure the starter isnt engaging

The starter sounds like it has a bad solenoid, but in this case the starter will have to be replaced to get a new solenoid and starter together.

If the battery is new and the connections are good, then a starter should fire the car right up.
In this case it is not, so I would say it's a starter.

I assume you were having trouble starting the vehicle, so changed the battery.

Have no fire and the shut off relay is clicking. The battery is fine changed relay and the same clicking noise happens when i turn the key on

Good battery, good relay. Take out the starter and have it tested. Although the same thing happened to me and the starter tested fine....twice ( after being told it was fine, I cleaned it up and put it back, still no good ) I replaced it anyway and all is good. The auto store felt so bad they gave me a lifetime starter for the price of a rebuilt. The tester doesn't put enough load on the starter to truly test it. Hope that helps.

My car will not start and I bought a brand new battery today and installed it. However the car still will not even fire up at all, but the power in the car still works. What could cause this?

Sounds to me like you need the starter tested or replaced,if you are not getting even a click then the starter needs a set of brushes,if all you get is a click then you need a starter solenoid, either way the starter needs to come off.

Car won't start not the battery

Test the neutral safety switch but doing the following steps.

1)foot on brake
2)turn key to on position
3)shift lever to neutral (N)
4)start the engine
5)shift the lever to Park (P)

If the engine can start at N and not at park then it's the neutral safety switch.

2006 GMC Sierra when you go to start it does alot of clicking before it eventually starts

Hi DL,

Two possibilities:
  1. Weak Battery
  2. Solenoid on its last legs
Just the fact that it eventually starts points me toward the solenoid (and not the starter).

Question on the "clicking": When you turn the key, do you get one solid click or a series of rapid fire clicks?

One solid click is the solenoid. It's not transferring power to the starter. These are a LOT cheaper to replace than the starter or battery.

Rapid fire is a weak battery. You can confirm this by getting a 'Load Test' at an Auto Parts or Battery store. This simulates the load of an engine starting on your battery. It takes 5 seconds, the results are Pass or Fail.

My moneys on the solenoid

Best of luck sir
