Question about Oldsmobile Cars & Trucks
My Brake lights on my 2002 Alero have been staying on and coming on when the car is not on and the key is not in the car. They sometimes go back off and other times stay on. Of course when I took it to the GM dealership it wouldn't do it the whole time it was there. Last night my brake lights were off when I parked my car at 7:00pm... but they came on around 11:00pm (according to my neighbor) and then this morning of course my battery was dead. :( i just had the ABS Wheel Speed Harness replaced and it's still doing it. UGH. Please help. I also have a problem with my Trac OFF and Anti-Lock and Service Vehicle Soon lights staying on. Please help...the dealership won't and Firestone can't either.
Sounds like an electrical problem in your steering collumn, alot of times all of your brake lights and turn signal lights go through your hazard light switch, so if there is a short in the wiring somewhere in your steering column before it branches off to the different lights, it will cause this to happen, iv seen it happen on mutliple vehicals, never on your particular vehical but that may be the root of your problem

It sounds more like it's the wheel speed sensor that is part of the hub/bearing assembly. Since you have had the hub replaced many times I would look for the electrical connectors for the wheel speed sensor as the problem. An easy no cost fix.
BTW...GM has issued a service bulletin for the hub/bearing kit that states NOT to use the old style nut that comes in some kits as it will cause premature bearing failure due to it's design and the high torque requirements. The correct shaft spindle nut part number to use is p/n 10289657 and is torqued to 178 nm. The GM bulletin number is 03-04-18-001.

Well i have the anti lock brakes light, trac off light, and service engine soon light on in my moms car. it has to be something to do with the sensor or else these lights wouldnt be on at the same time. so try checking your sensors. i told my mom not to buy american. have had problems with it since we got it.

i recently had this problem too, except i had all the lights on (ABS, service vehicle, trac-off, AND service engine) they are all easy to fix without spending more than 20-30$ for labour (depending how much your mechanic charges you) mine did it for free and he found out why the engine light is on afterwards too. so to fix all these lights (abs, trac-off, and service vehicle you MUST get another ABS cable (i went to a garage, they were towing a GM vehicle to the junk yard so i grabbed some scissors and cut BOTH abs cables on each side (good thing i did because one was bad) and braught them to my mechanic. the reason the lights come on is probably a defect or in my case my mechanic said it was salt buildup in the wires (on the drivers side) so he cut the wire off and rewired the new one and BOOM all the lights came off (service vehicle, abs, and trac-off) now for my service engine it says catalytic converter but im trying to put some fuel system cleaner to help it out i read somewhere that this is a defect of the car, so if you dont have that light yet, SELL your car ASAP for as much as you can get for it (after fixing the lights of course) and always google (car name+recalls) in the search bar to see what youre getting into, take care

Have the ABS codes scanned. This will get you started in the right direction. Possibility is that one or more of the wheel speed sensors is not working or intermittent - could be wiring or connectors on these as well. Another possibility is the EBCM, Electronic Brake Control Module. I believe the EBCM will throw 1216 code in many cases. THese can be rebuilt online for about $150.00.
The more likely problem is the wheel speed sensors. THese are an integral part of the wheel hub. About $100.00 each for the part. About $250.00 each to have them replaced. They can be tested with an AC voltmeter by spinning the wheel. Also, they should read roughly 850 ohms resistance. The ABS codes will tell you which ones are not reporting.

the anti-lock and traction lights will come on together if there is a common problem with the two, since they are closely related. may be a wheel speed sensor or something similar. the service engine soon light indicates a problem with the engine computer, can be anything from an emission system problem or an engine performance problem. all of these lights can come on with no apparent running problems on the car. the service vehicle soon light is basically a maintenance reminder, an oil change light. take the car into a shop and have the codes read for these lights.
