Question about 1999 Pontiac Sunfire

Sunfire cooling fans

My wifes POJ 99 sunfire is overheating to the point that the oil pressure light is coming on, with cast syntech 10w30 in it btw. but if i have her turn the ac on the lowest setting its fine so i know its the cooling fan. but i cant find any thing to help me fix it. the old car, what im asking is, is there an easy way to hot-wire the fan to come on when the car is started and off when its off? i tryed just crossing the terminals where i pulled the relay, but the fan stayed on regardless of key position. or is this a cheap fix like a fuse-link or something. im just thinking its a expensive fix possibly new computer. any help would be apreciated

Hello, I have a 2003 pontiac sunfire with an overheating issue. Replaced thermostat, still overheating no coolant in oil and no leaks. I don't want to start throwing parts at it untili know for sure...

Have a cooling system pressure test done . Check radiator cores for blockage. Check viscous fan hub for failure (if you have one) check cooling fans for correct operation. Have the fault codes read before wasting time and money guessing what has failed. Replace with genuine items only as aftermarket units
are not always compatible with the settings in the CPU.

Replaced thermostat on pontiac sunfire now there's smoke coming from coolant tank

Sounds like you have a leaking head gasket or damage to the engine from when it overheated.
A leaking head gasket can cause compression to leak into the cooling system and pull coolant into the cylinders which is burned out the exhaust. It does not have to leak into the oil.
A shop would check for exhaust gas in the cooling system and run a compression test on the cylinders.

CHECK ENGINE OIL LEVEL SHOULD BE ON THE FULL MARK ON ENGINE DIP STICK. IF OIL LEVEL IS LOW.LOOK FOR OIL LEAKS UNDERNEATH CAR.IF ENGINE NOT LEAKING OIL CHECK OIL PRESSURE SHOULD BE 22 PSI @ 900 RPM IF NOT OIL PUMP FAULTY OR YOU HAVE WORN ENGINE BEARINGS.IF OIL PRESSURE OKAY YOU COULD HAVE FAULTY OIL PRESSURE SENDING UNIT. CHECK COOLING FAN TO SEE IF CAR COOLING FANS RUNNING WHILE ENGINE OVERHEATING.IF NO CHECK COOLING FANS RELAY AND FUSE IF ALL IS GOOD ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR FAULTY. IF COOLING FANS RUNNING WHILE ENGINE OVERHEATING.HAVE RADIATOR AND ENGINE FLUSHED OUT. REPLACE THERMOSTAT AND RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP.

WHEN CAR STARTING OVERHEATING MAKE SURE COOLANT LEVEL DIDNT GET TOO LOW. IF NOT I WOULD REPLACE THERMOSTAT AND RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP IF OVERHEATING WHILE SITTING IDLING COOLING FAN NOT COMING ON.CHECK COOLING FAN FUSE AND RELAY IF ALL IS GOOD.CHECK COOLING BY HOTWIRING IT.IF RUNS YOU HAVE A BAD COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR OR FAULT IN WIRE CIRCUIT.IF FAN DONT RUN WHEN HOTWIRED REPLACE FAN MOTOR.IF CAR STILL KEEP OVERHEATING CHECK ENGINE OIL LOOKS LIKE MILK BLOWN HEAD GASKET.IF OIL LOOKS OKAY YOU NEED RADIATOR AND ENGINE FLUSHED OUT.

02 sunfire overheating

make sure you have radiator full of coolant
run the car to operating temperature
check the operation of the cooling fan
feel the upper radiator hose and the lower radiator hose. they both should be hot.
if one is cold then you may have a bad thermostat or restricted flow
if cooling fan does not come on when engine is hot then you have bad cooling fan switch, relay or motor.
good luck

Overheating

If the car is air locked...

Start it up , turn your heat on full blast. Then remove your resevoir cap. Let the car heat up to normal temp , at this point i would check to see if your fan is turning on. If you watch close inside your resevoir it will be bubbles or bubbling, let it run until you have no more air coming out.(no bubbles, if nessesary top off with fluid to the recomended level. Tightnen up your cap ,making sure it is seated properly and IS tight. Then go for a drive see if your still overheating.
