Question about 2011 Kia Sorento

1 Answer

Car turned off while driving.

I was previously having issues with starting my car. I would turn the key and it sounded like it was going to start then it would go dead then it would all of a sudden start. They told me i needed a new battery...now take into consideration this car is only about a year old. So I bought a new battery. Now yesterday I was driving down the interstate doing around 65 or so and my car made a thunk noise then went completely dead....radio turned off, engine lite came on then suddenly the car came back on. Yes, it scared the daylights out of me. I didn't know if I should drive it or not. Needless to say, it's in the shop but I'm thinking they'll probably tell me there isn't anything wrong with it. Has anyone had this problem and if so, what was done?

I just heard back from the dealership and he said that the right side had a loose cable on the right side. But i've changed batteries so what was the issue the first time around and no it's not the alternator. But thanks for the input.

Okay sorry about that that last comment was for another problem and put in wrong place. However there are a couple of easy things you can check to see if it fixes it. Check your fuse box and if you can find the fuse for the alternator (check owners manual) see if it is blown. Also if your neg battery terminal is shorting out or positive for that matter it could kill the engine. I don't think so but we live in a crazy world. What I would do is have the alternator and the battery checked , If you eliminate those then your down to a short somewhere in your electrical system. I think you will find the problem by checking them though. If not let me know and I will try to help you track down the prob.

Ok, i'll get my brother to check it out. I personally think it is something shorting out. He had said it was the positive cable that was loose that the person who put the battery in didn't tightened it.I do appreciate all the help you've given me. I'll keep you posted...thanks again.

The loose cable sounds plausible. Since it could have lost connection and then reconnected so was able to get up again and maybe didn't notice the first time. It couldn't be a battery cable however unless it was touching something else and shoting because you dont need your battery after the vehicle is started anyway,

Well, I had changed the battery after the first times because that's what the shop told me. So the mech told me the guy hadn't tightened it but it wouldn't have touched anything because there's a cover over it I believe. Ya, it just doesn't make sense to me and why all of a sudden, wouldn't i have had issues starting it if it was loose?

I agree if he is saying the battery cable was the reason he is an idiot because once the vehicle is running you can remove the battery and the car will be unaffected. The battery is strictly for starting the vehicle after that the alternator takes over.

  • Betty DeWalle Nov 04, 2012

Ya, he probably thought since I was a woman he could tell me anything and I would believe him. I think by the time I left he knew I didn't believe him.

Have you checked for a stuck throttle cable, or you could check your TPS (throttle position sensor) and IAC (idle air controller). 2 very good places to start.

  • Betty DeWalle Nov 05, 2012

No because I've never heard of them but is that something i would have to i would have to take my car into the shop for or how would I do it?

Hope this helps.

SOURCE: 2004 Kia Rio Won't Start Clicking Noise Battery is GOOD

My 2004 Kia Rio just started losing compression and died on me. I tried starting it and it only clicks. I checked the battery cables and they are not corroded and very tight. Could it be the battery or the alternator not charging the battery? there is no water in the oil and it's not the water pump.

Take it in for a diagnostic check.Thats the only way you will save money and the exact defect fixed rather then just poking in the dark.It could be something minor or the computer playing up.Cheaper to get diagnostic done than to be buying parts.

Starter ddisengages

Sounds like the bendix drive or solenoid on the starter is failing. The solenoid energizes the starter coil and also extends the drive into the flywheel.

wanted to Open Question
Hyundai accent 2008 starting issue. I wanted to post this to help others Mentally & financially as this is one of those things I could have spent hundreds on. Instead my dealer said you can throw parts at it & hope, or wait to an error code revealed itself. In the previous month I had replaced all belts, plugs & battery as I'm at 130000k & just paid it off. Ironically a week after my last car payment .this starting issue began, Get in ,drive to a store ...get back in to go home no start. Timing belt was just replaced...not timing1 Plugs just replaced...not plugs. Plenty of crank ,,new battery. Starter turns 2 or 3 cylinders fire & quits. What the F---!Take to the dealer...mechanic says it can be 1 of 4 things but of course starts there for him every time. Serviceicon1.png desk guy says to wait for error code to show up. Well 2 frustrated months later same problem & no code. However he also had asked if Id seen an error code of a key inside a car stay lit on my dash, if so it meant a fault in the key reader, After being stuck twice in one day last Friday I decided to pull my plugs and check for loose or whatever. Long story short after putting all back together,,,same problem!!! Yet it finally came to me ...YES there really is an answer. As I turned the key I started focusing on the dash and what lights came on .1st turn Acc,,,2nd turn about 5 things light up including a pic of a key inside a car,,3rd turn of the key cranks the starter & turns over the engine. Well ,,,it finally occurred to me on turn 2 that one of the lighted pics was missing...you guessed it,,,little key in car. So I kept turning from key from 1 to 2 for lights on dash until it finally lit up an when it did I turned the key to start & it did. Shut it off & tried again but noticed pic missing and car didn't start, I had been waiting all these months for this **** pic to show up as an error code on my dash but the problem was ...sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't so because it hadn't faulted yet no permanent error code could be read. However now I know I need a new key reader because so long as that pic appears on the dash in 2nd key turn ,my car has no issue, when pics not there it isn't starting. Hope this helps others diagnose this simple yet frustrating problem, life's simpler when you know what to look for.

Honda odyssey will not start clicking noise when key turned

Did you ever figure this out? I have a similar problem. There is a very light ticking sound when the key is in the on position but not being turned to start. In fact, nothing happens when turned to start now. It did at least click. The batter is good and everything electrical is working in the vehicle without dimming or anything. Jumping also did not change anything.

Car won't turn over randomly

When it will not crank, a mechanic would check for voltage at the starter, the clutch safety switch, and the key switch.

My 1997 chevy lumina will not start it just makes a clicking sound when i tr to turn te key

Sounds as if you have a bad starter. The vehicle running differently when cold is a whole different issue that has nothing to do with the starter. Below is a picture of the starter and its location. You can have someone turn the key as if to start the car while you actually touch the starter. If it is bad you will feel it trying to enguage or click inside. I'm guessing that's the clicking noise you hear. If the vehicle is in a bad location and you need to move it in order to replace the starter, again while someone is turning the key to start the car you can tap on it with a small hammer or something and GM starters are pretty good about loosening up and starting while you are tapping on it. This doesn't fix the problem it just will get you going so you can move it. This "tapping" works about 85 percent of the time on GM starters. Either way if you feel the starter trying to go with somebody turning the key, more than likely you are dealing with a bad starter. Hope this helps.

Your first problem sounds like starter solenoid. Replace starter should fix your problem. Second problem sounds like a misfire possibly? Change plugs wires, cap rotor.

The car starts and then shuts off

Am guessing electric fuel pump.

Get in car, put key in ignition, and turn to "On". Do not try to start. Listen closely for the fuel pump running. See if car starts. If it does, go through the sequence again, and see if car always starts, and if it runs longer than previously performing the above test..
