96 chev 4x4 5.7 Got spark plenty of gas. no codes but will not start, will fire but feels like timing is off it backfires thru throttle body. Will start sometimes and then is fine for several days.

Have replaced timing chain but made no differance

You are saying that the engine will crank or turn over but will not start? If so then you must fine out if the engine has both fuel and spark. after that you can get into the right direction. You can use starting fluid to see is there is a fuel issue. Read the directions on the can. Using too much can harm you and/or your engine.

Car is 1994 firebird with 3.4.Ran when parked but now turns over and hits trying to start but goes to backfiring and wont start


Try spraying carb cleaner in throttle body , see if starts ! Do you have a security light on the dash ? How many miles on it ? And is the spark happening at the right time ? jumped time , timing chain !

Backfiring thru carburetor


the 90 has no CARB, the 89 1.3l ONLY did
but the 1.6L are all EFI , TBI throttle body systems.
If infact it does have a carb, someone added it, it's not stock.

the 89 to 95 TBI cars are near the same, 1.6L 8valves.
the 90 has a stand alone distributor, the ECU does not make
or regulate spark like a 91 does.

So you have backfiring , back up thru the throttle body to the air cleaner. this is a clear sign of never doing the tuneups.
The service manual is free as id the op. guide..
The 60k, mile tune (service points in today lingo) was skipped
am I right/
this skipped point allows the timing belt to slip.
the first sign of that is.
1: low compression.
2: and spark timing way off (last step in tuneup finds this)
3: backfiring, due to gross cam timing and dizzy timing errors.

The compression WOT, must be 150 PSI.

did you ever set the crank bolt (front)
to the new TSB (circa 96 , and retrograde) spec?

then a full spark tuneup
then check spark timing, and if way off consider the
cam has slipped?

100 psi per cylinder is way too low--should be in the vicinity of 150-165 per cylinder
back firing indicates wrong firing order and as you have replaced the plugs etc check that you have the leads on the correct plugs in the correct order
the timing for the engine should be around the 10 degree btdc and not tdc

The cranking will usually sound different after the timing chain has slipped. Does it spit or backfire when you crank it? I suggest you rule out some easier things before going after the timing chain. If you are getting spark and fuel, then maybe I would take a peek at the timing chain to see if it has skipped on the sprocket.

Doesn't start


All an engine needs to run is air, fuel, spark, and timing. You appear to be getting fuel. Pull a plug and reconnect it to the plug wire. Ground it to the engine away from gas and fumes and see if you get a good hot blue spark. If so cover the intake with your hand and turn the engine over. If you feel vacuum then you are probably getting air. If all of these things are okay then you are most likey looking for a timing issue. This could be mechanical like the timing belt or chain, valve train and cam(s), etc... It could also be the engine management systems including camshaft positoin sensor, mass airflow sensor, etc... I am assuming the van has the 4.3 Liter V-6 common for that model.
If it backfires it is probably getting spark maybe not at the right time. If these simple checks pan out you probably need to refer this problem to a mechanic.
