The key is the "check light". You can get a free scan at Autozone, Advance, or Oreilys. This will identify some defects.

The clerk can sell you a repair part or you can tell us the Code number and we can explain the defect. Some repairs are plug and play, others may be buried beneath other parts. Then at least knowing what needs to be fixed can help you price the repair if you do not want to do it yourself.

What other engine will fit a 97 civic ex?


The 96-98 Civic EX came with an OBD2A D16Y8 engine. That is the only engine that will go in as a direct replacement with your current engine ECU. It's an SOHC VTEC engine that has two extra connections not found on the other 96-98 Civic engines - a VTEC solenoid and a special oil sensor used to determine if VTEC engagement is possible. If you swap in an older Civic engine (92-95 generation) you'll have to convert the car to OBD1 (requires a special adapter hardness) and run the ECU that goes with whatever engine you use. This will break functionality of your OBD2 diagnostics port, and depending on which state you live in will cause you to fail emissions checks. If you install a D16Y8 engine from a 99-00 Civic EX, you will have to swap the intake and exhaust manifolds from your old engine to the new engine, and you will be able to continue to run your existing OBD2A wiring and ECU. The 99-00 Civic EX engines have additional sensors, since those engines are OBD2B. The easiest fix would be to find a SOHC VTEC D16Y8 from a 96-98 Civic EX, as it would be a direct plug and play replacement.

Puttering engine, and boggs down when trying to accelerate


Change fuel filter to start with, and see if that remedies the problem.

Honda civic 96 will not start have check all electrical and pump


check the oil and make sure it's NOT black, Check air filter, oil filter, and gas filter, check engine fuse, see if spark plugs are ok, check starter, check alternator and belt. if problem still persists please contact me at jhowe67@yahoo.com

My 2000 honda civic engine light on code p1456


Hey I had the same code and I have a 2000 honda civic lx. My cousin works at honda and drives a '96 honda civic and he has had that code before on his car as well.

First thing he came up with was that the catalytic converter was cracked. We checked mines, and lo and behold, that's what it was.

Look under your hood, and there should be a catalytic converter with a sensor sticking out of it. It is connected to the exhaust manifold and the sensor sticks out of the heat shield. Around the sensor, look for a crack. If there's a crack, that's your problem.
