The following are the general instructions on the start of diagnosing any electronically controlled engine or transmission problem.

The engine and the automatic transmission (transmission control is only for automatics, engine is still computer controlled no matter the transmission type) in this vehicle are computer controlled and in most cases when a fault occurs a fault code is stored in the memory of the computer control module. There are exception to this, such as the Mass Airflow Meter and fuel pressure problems. What must be done is to have all the basic testing done such as a scan of the system for fault codes as well as a check with a live data scanner tool for engine functions that are not within range of normal, a trained technician is required to know what is correct and what isn't, then based on careful diagnostics done from a factory repair manual the correct part is replaced or the wiring repaired or the computer replaced (known as the PCM or ECM,ECU), which is very rarely the problem. Other basic checks must be done as well such as mechanical problems with the engine as well as engine state of tune and mileage on the engine. The transmission can have mechanical issues as well such as no gear engagement at all or a failed pump or other pressure related problems. Also engine mechanical problems can and do cause many drive-ability related problem such as rough idle and other symptoms.

99 jeep grand cherokee 4.0 starts but wont stay running. no check engine light on

Many issues will not set a code so start with basic troubleshooting. Is fuel pressure correct? Is EGR dirty or sticking open? Is IAC dirty or sticking? Is compression correct? Bad coolant temp sensor, bad O2 sensor, clogged exhaust or converter all can cause this, even a bad vacuum leak!

Once my 1999 jeep grand cherokee larado with 4.0 will not take gas and dies out at operating temp

Need to road test with scan tool on it & look at data

Need to confirm the temp issue & what your saying

Need to see fuel pressure & if correct, what it is at 200
when the issues start.

Maybe the egr comes in later & leans it out

Maybe it won't stay in closed loop & that is temp related for sure

Think you need to go for a road test, you drive & shop guy rides
with scanner, have to be part of the solution or they will sell you
spark plugs & call it a tune-up,remember they have been gone for
25 years

My 2004 jeep suddenly started to stay in first gear foe about a mile before acting normally.. Any suggestions?

check your trans fluid and make sure it is pink and clean ( not dark and burnt).
If the fluid is pink or red... then you just experienced a sticky valve body....

My 94 jeep grand cherokee limited acted as though it was running out of gas then it died however it had plenty. now it starts some of the time and only stay running for a short while.

Sounds like a classic bad fuel pump...When the pump begins to fail, it overheats and binds. After a short wait, it cools off and runs again. However, a bad filter can often do the same thing. Replace the filter (good maintenence) and if the problem continues, change the pump.

does your jeep run rough? idle is real low? and when you are driving and push the gas hard it doesnt want to move? if so it is most likely the mass air flow sensor. i had to replace that 2 or 3 times on my 1999 jeep cherokee

The engine do not work

Hello primeiro, does your Jeep stay running(5min) or does it start and then dies, like it is not getting enough gas? What is the small red lamp that is flashing? Mine is my security alarm indicater. What do u mean by scanner? and takes cod 12? cod? 12? Let me know what you have tried or what else may have been going on in past but seemed to have stop, for un- reason. Jeeps can be puzzling, and then be fine. Everytime it would act up I would call the Jeep people and schedule a appt. in a day or so, it would keep acting up and then when I drive onto the Jeep people lot it would not act up. AT ALL. I was told there are other Jeep owners that sweared something was wrong but when taken to be check it would be fine. The Jeep people say that I am not the first to feel dumb or I was delusional. So now instead of calling, I go directly there when I had a problem or noise and I had them jump in for a ride to see what I was experiencing. "It's a Jeep thing, you wouldn't understand." I now have on my Jeep on my back window. I LOVE my Jeep, even though they can drive us crazy. Good Luck and Happy Jeepin'
