Question about 1990 Volvo 240

1990 Volvo 240 DL engine cranks but takes awhile to start up.

We put new battery in and replaced little white box from under dash on
left side.It still cranks but is slow to engage engine.

Your talking about fuel pump relay,when was the last you had an tune up?wires,plugs,rotor,cap,fuel filter?

Amazing that your original crank position sensor lasted this long. Most of them fail at about 12-14 years. A steam cleaning would definitely do in a 21 year-old sensor lead.
If you ever need to replace the fuel pump relay again, you can get to it by removing the felt below the dash. That is a little quicker, though you have to get on the floor and look up.
The one other thing that commonly stops this car is the computer that supplies the ground to the fuel pump relay. That is behind the kick panel to the right of the passenger's right foot. If that has never failed yet, you are doing pretty well. Rebuilt computers are available from several suppliers. I would not buy a 21-year-old computer from a junk yard.

I need to replace the front driver side seat in my 1990 240 dl. Will any model year fit or do I need a seat from a 1990 240 dl?


I believe that any 240 seat will fit. You actually want an older one. I think '89 or '90 was the year when they switched to lighter tubing. The '90 through '92 seat frames are nearly all tweaked, and sometimes crack.
If you don't buy new foam, try covering the foam with denim from old blue jeans, fastened on with spray on adhesive. That will keep it from crumbling on the seat springs.

1990 240 dl Volvo wagon, have to put fully charged battery, then when the battery is discharges the car dies, alternator ? Voltage regulator ?


sounds as though you have a bad alternator or a loose alternator belt and the battery is not being charged. while the car is running - check the voltage from the alternator and make sure it is about 13.4 volts DC.

How do I replace windshild wipers on 1990 volvo dl. I cannot get the old ones off.


if memory serves,lift arm away from glass,then push the little clip,where the wiper joins the arm and push down along the arm.(sorry if im wrong but it has been 20 years since i played with volvo)

it should be under the drivers side dash under steering wheel column. if not sometimes they put them on the left wall under the drivers side dash

your injectors arnt opening make sure that your white relay is good check grounds clean off the battery post. whats happening is your cold start injector is spraying a little fuel in to get it going and it is running off of that.

Try to reset your computer ,pull off your pos batt cable,for about 5mins,also replace your fuel pump relay.

1990 240 volvo,no brake lights and rain makes it hard to start


The tail light assemblies were a bad design in these cars. You need to take each socket out, and clean the contact points on them. Make sure they have a secure connection, and they haven't caused the bulbs to blow out.

The ignition module is located on the inner fender on the drivers side. I would check it to see if it is getting wet. It will cause the engine to not start.
