check that you put the thermostat in the right way. The body of the unit has to be in the head / block water. Simple check is to start from cold and within 5-10 minutes idling you should start to feel hot water coming through the top radiator hose.. If in ok the bleed the air out of the cooling system by loosing off the highest hose and let the air out until you get solid water flow . Run the engine while doing this so that the water is circulated by the pump. Make sure that the heater core is open to allow the air in it to be removed
If your having to put that much water in it I would lean towards a bad head gasket your other symptoms would make me think possible water pump. I'd check them both 1 of the 2 is most likely the prob or possiobly both. Good luck.
COULD BE THERMOSTAT IF TOP RADIATOR HOSE IS NOT HOT AND BOTTOM RADIATOR HOSE GOING TO WATER PUMP IS HOT THE THERMOSTAT STICKING PARTIALLY CLOSE.IF TOP HOSE IS HOT THE RADIATOR,ENGINE BLOCK HEATER CORE NEED FLUSHING OUT.IF WATER PUMP WEEP HOLE LEAKING REPLACE WATER PUMP, FAULTY WATER PUMP WILL CAUSE ENGINE TO OVER HEAT.REPLACE RADIATOR CAP MAKE SURE YOU HAVE 50 / 50 MIX SOLUTION ANTIFREEZE AND WATER IN COOLANT SYSTEM. IF ALL LOOKS GOOD CHECK ENGINE OIL ON DIP STICK, IF OIL IN DIP STICK LOOK LIKE MILKSHAKE YOU HAVE BLOWED HEAD GASKET THAT WILL CAUSE ENGINE OVERHEATING WHILE DRIVING CAR IN SHORT DISTANCE AND ENGINE OVERHEATING.
yes, if the water pump is bad, input hose will be hot output hose will be cool, but that also could mean a bad thermostat.
a way to see if the water pump is pumping coolant is to remove the bleed screw on the thermostat housing and see if coolant spews out.
But it overheats. may as well change out the water pump and get rid of the original plastic impellers. While you're there, replace the thermostat with a 12 degree cooler one and drill 2 3/16" holes 180 degrees from each other in the thermostat.
2.8L motors are sensitive to overheating. you can bust a head gasket this way in no time. Also warp that long cylinder head.
Your thermostat is located where the upper radiator hose connects to the engine under a housing. If it is not leaking there then check the bottom of your water pump. Look at it from underneath and you will see a small weep hole in the water pump housing. If it is leaking there your seal or bearing packing has gone bad. Simple solution- replace the water pump. The other reasons for overheating could be a stuck thermostat which will cause the vehicle to overheat within about 5-10 minutes after starting. The other cause could be a radiator that needs to be roded and cored because of to many deposits internally causing restricted flow of the coolant.The thermostat could be cracked or rusted out also. Try to gain access to a system pressurizer to find your leak. I have given you just about every scenario to check to find your problem. Good luck.
check ur themostat take it out boil some water in a pot drop ur thermostat in the pot watch to see if it opens take it out watch it close if working properly,make sure ur pump is moving water take off ur radiator cap to insure water is moving,then check to insure ur cap is getting a good tight seal u only have ur cap,pump,hoses,radiator,thermostat,unless of course youve overheated recently???then u could have other issues
Presurize system with radiator cap on to see if you are holding 10 to 13 LB pressure as high as 17 LB. Get new radiator cap for your radiator. Check for a slow leak at pump hose thermostat conection , is it wet ?

check new thermostat in a pot of water & heat it up watch that it opens up when it heats up should be at aroun 96 degrees F
otherwise the radiator may need a good clean out or a recore!
there my be a blocked water gallery so engine may need a flush aswell
The thermostat is behind the upper radiator hose...remove the upper radiator hose and loosen and then remove the two bolts on the outlet (where the upper radiator hose ends) The thermostat is inside that outlet...Another thing to check is if there is water in the oil...If there is water in the oil then it could have a head gasket problem..Did you ever replace the thermostat? If it is stuck then it would also cause overheating...Excessive exhaust backpressure because of a clogged catalytic converter could also cause overheating..Also check belt tension and condition. A loose belt that slips may prevent the water pump from circulating coolant fast enough and/or the fan from turning fast for proper cooling...Another thing it could be is a faulty Water pump -- Any wobble in the pump shaft or seepage would call for replacement. In some instances, a pump can cause an engine to overheat if the impeller vanes are badly eroded due to corrosion or if the impeller has come loose from the shaft. The wrong pump may also cause an engine to overheat. Some engines with serpentine drive belts require a special water pump that turns in the opposite direction of those used on the same engine with ordinary V-belts... Also check the Fan -- With mechanical fans, most overheating problems are caused by a faulty fan clutch, though a missing fan shroud can reduce the fan's cooling effectiveness by as much as 50% (depending on the fan's distance from the radiator) which may be enough to cause the engine to overheat in hot weather or when working hard.
