Starting 1994 jeep cherokee

I went to make a payment and walked in and out and my car wouldent start car said i have 1/4 tank of gas went to schucks they tested battary said it sounds like i might need a new fuel filter or need gas. went to gas station got a gallon of gas car started right up so i went to fill it up and it usually takes 16 gallons and costs 30 dollars to fill up it stops at 11 gallons and costed me about 14 bucks total with the gallon i got to start it so i had the 1/4 tank in it. car has started up since im waiting to see if it happens again at 1/4 tank. ive been told its the fuel pump from a cupple phone calls and was told the filter i dont want to get stuck somewhere or get ripped off what is the problem and how much sould i pay? thank you for you time.

  • ilovescouts Jan 03, 2009

im pretty postive the gauge is correct due to the only being able to fill 11 gallons instead of the 16 gallons that it should take to fill. but i have heard that it may also be the problem grr on cars hehe

  • ilovescouts Jan 03, 2009

the gas gauge im poretty sure works correctly cause of how much it took to fill the truck.

Well you troubleshooted the problem by yourself. When you put in gas it washed the filter off and your truck started. Your problem is just the fuel screen( or filter) located in the tank but you tank also needs to be flushed out to keep future occurances from happening. It is totally up to you. You can either just change the screen or change the fuel pump and it will come with a new screen. Price them both at the auto parts store and see the difference in price. It is recomended to let the professionals do this job just because of the easy to break fuel lines. But Whom ever diagnosed fuel pump and fuel filter did diagnosed it correctly. But most garages will not warrenty the job unless you change both the filter and the pump. WHEN YOU DO HAVE THE JOB DONE IT IS RECOMENDED TO HAVE LESS THAN A HALF OF A TANK OF FUEL BECAUSE WHAT EVER AMOUNT THAT IS IN THERE WILL BE REMOVED AND NEW FUEL PUT BACK IN. ALSO DONT LET THEM FILL IT UP FOR YOU UNTIL YOU KNOW THE AMOUNT THEY ARE GOING TO CHARGE YOU PER GALLON. YOU SHOULD NOT PAY FOR MORE THAT $150.00 FOR LABOR AND WHATEVER THE PART COST. Me myself as a shade tree mechanic. I usually charge $100.00 plus parts. Good luck

The Pump and Filter are Absolutely the Problem! Replace them Both. Small price to pay for Security and Cheaper than a New Jeep.

You can Start with the Fuel Filter and see What Happens. It is the Cheapest of the Two and less Labor Intensive.

Filter and Pump could send a False reading if one is not Functioning Properly. Don't think the Sending unit is Bad though.

I would let the tank get to a 1/4 off a tank again in your drive way let it run and see if runs out gas if it dose you most likly need a sending unit which you have to drop the tank , is it a oem pump it may cost you a little bit . the gas gauge not working correctly has noting to do with the gauge not reading correctly kdc744

What does it mean when a 2000 Jeep Cherokee V8 just stop working without any warning?

it could be several things, 1. it could be the fuel pump and filter, which is located inside of the gas tank. 2. it could be a fuel pump relay, that went bad, this is located in a black box, on the drivers side, along with other relays , and fuses, check the fuel pump relay, and the start relay. hopefully 1 of these is the problem, i suspect that the jeep was running fine before it stopped, if so, i would still check the items , that i have mentioned, good luck, and hope that this information has helped you. p.s. in order to see if the fuel pump is working, remove the gas cap from where you put gas into, and hold your ear close to the gas tank opening, then , have someone turn the ignition key on, but do not start the vehichle, while the key is on, listen to see if you hear a hummimg sound , coming from the gas tank, if so, the pump is workimg, if no sound, i would suspect the fuel pump.

Ran out of gas in my 1994 jeep cherokee, put in 2gals and can't get it to start now. Cycled the engine several times and attempted to start again and still nothing. Not sure where to go from here

did you run out of gas or did the pump fail ?? have you bled it off on the fuel rail ,look on the fuel feed to the injectors and there is a tyre valve looking thing ,take the dust cap off and then push it in with a something whilst someone cranks engine and see if you have fuel coming through

1994 jeep grand cherokee laredo starting problems

Check to see if the fuel pump is running after it shuts down...could be a relay or the pump itself (overheating internally) Checked the fuel filter yet? Some crank sensors need to be shimmed. If it's too close to the flywheel even though you recently changed it, if it's too close to the wheel it can fail again. May not be the case but worth checking over. Also check the ceramic resistor on the left fender near the master cylinder if you have one. That too can cause problems.

it could be two things: the hose that is connected to the top of the tank has a hole in it or the tank itself has a hole

Jeep won;t start..new fuel pump installed

try the fuel filter and make sure you have proper oil pressure!! Remeber if you have tried craking to many bad times then the plugs are going to be fouled out!! Means that they are going to be drowned with gas and need replacing!! Also make sure your fuel pump is coming on!! You should hear a hissin or a hummin noise back from the fuel tank!
