Car drives good but it died while driving

My 93 grand prix le was driving good today and then it died while driving, i tried to restart but it didnt turn over . it is getting spark, and the gas tank is full, what caused this problem?? i dont smell gas in the engine compartment , could this be a bad ignition pack? or fuel pump? or a simple fuse?? the car has no hesitation while driving but it just died. it cranks over but not enough to stay on, it dies, why?????

nothing happened! car just stumbles over not enough to keep it running! would this be an ignition coil pack problem???

  • nigelmahabir Jan 05, 2009

i took one spark plug out and inserted a screwdriver grounded to chassis and the spark was bright yellow not blue and i hear a ticking noise when i try to start car next to the wires.

seems the spark is way off!!! the fuel pressure valve on top when depressed does shoot out abit of gas, so i know fuel pump is fine, should i ,look into the ignition coil pack assembly? and also it comes in 3 packs or 1 single one? can 1 be replaced or all at the same time?? if i find out whick one is bad.?

Even WD-40 didn't help, a good shot of it? Are you sure you have spark?

Cycle key on (not start, just on ) then off, then , on, then off, then on. Listen for hum in rear of car when you do it. After 3rd on, off, try to start it & see if it will start & run for a little while, then die. Now try to start again without the on,of etc. What happens?

If that doesn't work, try taking off air intake hose at throttle body & open plate and spray WD-40 inside intake. Now try to start, what happens?

I'm leaning toward a bad crankshaft sensor. There's a couple of experienced GM guys on here, so we'll pass it by them first just to be sure.

I recently bought a 93' Grand Prix, it's only 130k

If it acted like it wanted to start, then I would suspect the fuel pump. Try hitting the bottom of the tank, this sometimes jars the pump to start working again. If it works you can drive it, but you will need to replace the pump, it will only do this so many times.

My 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix died while driving. I can restart it, but it quickly sputters and dies. My battery is still getting power, because my lights and radio still work. There is oil and gas in the...

Hello....

Thanks for the through amount of information. This sound like a fuel pump issue but on a car not that old in years it might just be the battery. Even though you have power to the items you mention, the battery can still be to low to keep the car running.

You did not mention if the Check Engine Light was on. If it is or not I would get a scan of the computer done to see if there are some codes sotored in the computer. After getting the codes post back.

Good Luck

My 1990 pontiac grand prix le will start and idle fine but when you give it gas and it gets up to 2000 rpm it bogs out and dies! hELp! what can it be?

it could be either a clogged catalytic converter, or a mass air flow sensor. One way to check the cat is to let the car run for about 10 minutes and look at the underside of the car to see if anything is glowing, or check it after a very short drive. To check the Mass airflow sensor locate it and unplug it while the car is running and see if it clears up.

My 1998 grand prix gtp cut off today while driving it. car still has power battery is not dead. alternator still good and the car will not start. it will turn over but wont quite fire up

my 1998 grand prix does the exact same thing. It just shuts off while driving. I still have battery power. I have called pontiac dealers in my area and they dont seem to have any idea to fixing without changing everything in hopes the hit the problem
Can you narrow it down.

Car dies while driving

It could be something as simple as a bad or loose ground wire but the hard part is finding it.
Good luck
