Going down road went to speed up tach shot up but speed did not, pulled over checked linkage moves ok fluid level stays same with engine running or off. believe engine not driving transmission what will it take to fix? is this common?
Windstar tranny problem: just got off phone with Northway Transmission of Queensbury, NY Technician said the torque converter had destroyed itself. the pump drive spline in converter broke and took out fins in torque converter it's going to cost me nearly $1600.00 car has only 45000mi on it and I caught it rather quickly and DID NOT TOW had car moved by flatbed/ramp truck otherwise they would have had to completly tear down transmission. (over $2300.00)

Buster, check the transmission fluid level, if level OK it is something wrong internal of transmission, torque converter, pump, shaft splines stripped, etc. Take into a good shop for diagnosis and estimate to repair/replace.Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

Check transmission fluid warm idling wipe stick and check several times fluid seems to stay in tube and gives you false readings there is a retainer plate in valve body that breaks and causes inadvertent downshifting this requires pressure gauges on transmission to verify problem.
Very common, The pump drive splines in the torque converter are stripped. You will at least need to have the converter replaced. You can confirm this by checking the fluid with the engine off and then on.The fluid will be lower with the engine running if the pump is working.
Does it do anything? These are common for the torque converters going bad. You can tell if this happens, it won't do anything, forward and backward, also when you check the fluid, it will read overfull.
Check your transmission fluid level if at all possible. If your fluid is low you won't be able to engage any gears as there isn't enough pressurized fluid to shift the clutch or selector in the transmission box. If that's fine, next check the selector link and check it is connected to the transmission (not totally unheard of for it to come loose). Still no joy then it's the clutch...sorry.
a few possibilites, like usual with out actually running through some of these test your self and narrowing it down heres some things: first one damaged or faulty transmission computer (if knackerd you will not get a code) second damaged transmission either input shaft or torque converter or differential both of these will take either really good experienced tech or do it yourselfer or some money and patience these can be tested in transmission section of repair manual either haynes or chiltons will do shift linkage or bushings disconnected or damaged this will take some time to inspect from shift columb to transmission my advice take it to a pro or consult one of our expert techs online chat
