There is a change in the Intake manifold gasket.
i do alot of head gaskets in my shop. I will send a picture here and show you the change.has the water pump been change .my 2000 Xterra keeps overheating. have replaced th - 10_31_2012_8_49_41_am.jpg

If your symptoms are loss of water and you have replaced the thermostat, you more than likely have an issue with steam. And that steam more than often comes from a bad head gasket. Most head gasket gasket failures seem to be confined to the water side initially, but let it go on bigger damage will occur.
You can buy a litmus test strip to dunk in the coolant. It will indicate if there are exhaust residuals in the water and thus a gasket failure.

However it may just be something simple, given that you have just about replaced everything:

have you given the radiator a good hosing inside and out?
is the radiator fan running when it should be?

What engine do you have? One noted problem with the 4 cylinder engines is the reliability that at some point the intake will crack. I went through all the same things when I bought my 93. Drove off the lot, started overheating, replaced the thermostat and still had the problem without moving from the driveway. Look all around the intake. Make sure car is full of coolant and have the engine running. Most likely you will see a small coolant leak on the backside by the firewall. These cars were known for this problem. By the way if this is the problem make sure you take it to a reputable mechanic, make sure you get a new one installed. I had a used one and had the car back in the shop the next day. It then sat there for 2 more weeks while the used car dealer and I had a "discussion".

The only way a heater core can cause overheating is if it's leaking and the engine is low on antifreeze. To check it for leaks it would help to use a cooling system pressure tester.

If the dash is removed you've saved about 9 10ths of the job endurance. Look around, what you believe to be, the perimeter of the heater box. I cannot, and no one else can, tell you exactly where the bolts and nuts that mount the heater box are. Therefore you must viually sixe the box and check outide in the engine compartment and inside under the dash for the mounting bolts.You'll want to start by removing the heater hoses. Then starting at the passenger side engine compartment look for a group of 10mm or 7/16ths nuts retaining the housing and remove them. Do the same inside. The housing is usually held together with screws or clips, it changes year to year. Keep a log or pix of the wires and cables and hoses(vacuum) that are connected to the housing for reassembly. You'll need to "roll" the box out from under the dash depending on how much of the dash has been removed. The core is easy to spot for is has two hoses sticking out, and, is encircled with clips or screws . Also make sure you remove the bracket around the two entry hoses if it has one. Thank you, Dana

I don't know your vehicle, but does it have a blower door tucked in where the heater core is? If it DOES and that's broken then it could be the whole problem. It would mean it isn't switching from the A/C side of things to the heat side of them. Hope this helps, good luck! Also, just looked up the proper name for what I'm talking about, it's called a "blend door" and I think your car has one. It's what I would check, again, good luck!

It sounds like you might have air trapped in your cooling system/ heater core. When the engine is cold, start it up and remove the radiator cap. As it warms up, keep adding water until it wont take anymore and its at operating temperature. Then replace the cap. Confirm your cooling fan is coming on also, assuming its electric...

WILL A BLOWN HEATER CORE CAUSE A CAR TO OVERHEAT


No a heater core alone will not cause a vehicle to overheat. The heater cores sole purpose is to transfer heat generated by the engine to the blower motor so that you can get heat from your car vents. A person could technically remove the heater core from the vehicle and connect the hoses together to bypass it, and the car will run as if nothing happened, minus the lack of heat in the vents.

If the car is overheating, there are three mai issues that could be happening. 1) The radiator is blocked and not allowing coolant to be cooled off before returning to the engine.
2) The water pump is broken. The engine relies on this pump to move the coolant throughout the engine. It may not leak as long as the gasket is alright but the impeller ( small fans on the inside of the water pump ) could not be turning.
3) Lastly and most commonly is a faulty Thermostat. The thermostat is the valve which opens and closes at certain tempuratures and decides if hot coolant stays in the engine or circulates to the radiator to be cooled off. If the thermostat fails, unless you have a failsafe one, will fail in the closed position keeping the hot coolant in the engine and causing it to overheat.

The thermostat is by far the cheapest of the issues so consider changing that first along with a coolant flush before considering putting a new rad or waterpump. You can usually get a thermostat, 2 jugs of coolant and a flush kit for about 50$ at pretty much any parts store. Becareful however not to drive a overheating vehicle as gasket burning and head warpage can occur, which will require rebuilding th head.

Nope, unless somehow it got clogged!
Make sure your coolant level is correct, and your fan/s are working.
If both are correct/operating properly, your problem is most likely the thermostat

check to see if you lose any coolant. they are bad about breaking at the heater core pipes. the job for the heater core is not cheap!

If the vehicle is overheating, then thermostat is bad. If it is not, then most likely heater-core is bad as long as heater blower motor is working.

Hi!
It appears we have an Air lock scenario and you will need to perform a system Bleed.
Park the vehicle on level ground, when cold remove coolant filler cap, start engine and leave to idle, turn heater on full and blower to max. When engine reaches operating temperature watch and listen near coolant filler, keep clear as gurgling and hopefully a boil over should occur. Top up with very warm coolant and wait as it may do it again.
Check for heat inside vehicle if warm replace coolant cap but keep an eye on temperature gauge as the ~Air lock may have moved on from heater matrix/core so proceedure needs to be carried out again from COLD.
If persistent boil ups/over attention must made in the cylinder head
or gasket area, or possibly water pump?

Overheating


If the vehicle is overheating then you need to keep your eye on the heater core. the heater core was an issue with this model and when it finally goes out so will your engine!
