Noise from the bellhousing usually means a bad throwout bearing, but make sure it is adjusted correctly first. Must have clutch pedal freeplay of a cm or 2. But would help to know the make, model, and year, to be sure.

I have a 2wd 1999 Chevy Tahoe, Since I've changed my transmission I've started to get a knocking/ticking noise from under the car near the transmission if anyone could help me please do so.


The plate that bolts to the flywheel may have been bent if you used something to turn it while installing. If it's bent, it could be hitting the crank position sensor. If you raise the vehicle and remove flywheel cover, blocking the rear wheels of course. SAFETY! You'll have to use a long screwdriver to turn the flywheel by hand, checking the plate for roundness at each hole as you go all the way around. If it's out of round, you can use an open ended wrench to pry it into place.

Transmission or flywheel problem


Flywheels very seldom give a problem and have nothing to do with acceleration problems . If it was loose you would have massive vibrations and would know of a problem . If it is an automatic the so called flywheel ( flex plate) have a tendency to crack at the crank mounting bolts and the cracks radiate out to where the torque converter mounts on and then there will be no drive or start action as the ring gear just falls away from the starter. The noise may be from the plate starting to fail so remove the inspection cover and check the plate for cracks or rust streaks which are cracks that you will not see.

Clicking noise coming from around flywheel.


If the car is an automatic, it will have a thin metal flex plate, rather than a regular flywheel. If the flexplate gets a crack in it, it would cause a bit of noise. See if there is an inspection plate on bottom front of transaxle. Remove the inspection cover to look at the flex plate. Turn the engine over to view the flexplate all around. Look for cracks, maybe a loose or missing mounting nut where torque converter mounts on flex plate. If you see nothing, leave the inspection cover off, and run the engine and listen closely for a problem from that area.
Leaking oil, eh? Don't know if related, but while looking at the flexplate, check if motor oil is leaking out the rear main crankshaft seal. It will be fitted to the rear engine block, in front of the flex plate. Oil would be dripping off the rear of engine, or maybe collecting at bottom of bell housing, evident when inspection cover is removed.

Starter noise during cranking and after the engine fires is often a result of too much or tool little distance between the starter pinion gear and the flywheel. A high pitched whine during cranking (before the engine fires) can be caused by the pinion and flywheel being too far apart. Likewise, a whine after the engine starts (as the key is released) is often a result of the pinion-flywheel relationship being too close. In both cases flywheel damage can occur. Shims are available in 0.015 in. sizes to properly adjust the starter on its mount. In order to check and adjust the shims, you will also need a flywheel turning tool, available at most auto parts stores or from any auto tool store or salesperson. If your car's starter emits the above noises, follow the shimming procedure below:
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle safely using jackstands.
  3. Remove the torque converter cover on the bottom of the bell housing.
  4. Using the flywheel turning tool, turn the flywheel and examine the flywheel teeth. If damage is evident, the flywheel should be replaced.
  5. Insert a screwdriver into the small hole in the bottom of the starter, then move the starter pinion and clutch assembly so the pinion and flywheel teeth mesh. If necessary, rotate the flywheel so that a pinion tooth is directly in the center of the two flywheel teeth and on the centerline of the two gears, as shown in the accompanying illustration.
  6. Check the pinion-to-flywheel clearance by using a 0.020 in. wire gauge (a spark plug wire gauge may work here, or you can make your own). Make sure you center the pinion tooth between the flywheel teeth and the gauge — NOT in the corners, as you may get a false reading. If the clearance is under this minimum, shim the starter away from the flywheel by adding shim(s) one at a time to the starter mount. Check clearance after adding each shim.
  7. If the clearance is a good deal over 0.020 in. (in the vicinity of a 0.050 in. plug), shim the starter towards the flywheel. Broken or severely mangled flywheel teeth are also a good indicator that the clearance here is too great. Shimming the starter towards the flywheel is done by adding shims to the outboard starter mounting pad only. Check the clearance after each shim is added. A shim of 0.015 in. at this location will decrease the clearance about 0.010 in. Battery and Starter Specifications Chart

My 2005 golf 5 gti dsg currently has 89000km on the clock. It is used extensively in traffic covering 60km/day/week. It has developed an irritating "knocking noise" in the engine.Booked it at a local VW...


hi,
i couldn't say for certain without hearing the noise , but i have replaced one or two "dual mass flywheels" on these models, alot of people don't realise the dsg actually has a dual mass flywheel.

FLYWHEEL MAKES RUBBING NOISE WHEN WARM AND ACCELERATING


You have a grinding noise when it's running or when you try to start it?
There is an inspection cover just behind the oil pan of the engine. If you remove it you can see the teeth on the flywheel. Chances are that the flywheel may still be good and the starter drive (part of starter) may be failing. If so and you leave it that way it will damage the flywheel. On automatic cars it's called a flex plate. And yes if you have a chrysler trans on there the converter may have the ring gear welded on.

I have a 2004 F-150 5.4 and I need to know if the flywheel is messed up or if it's something else. It's making a loud scraping/grinding noise around the flywheel, more so when I accelerate.


Take off Trans Dust cover and inspect, See if there is any damage to the Trans dust cover? See if starter has to be shimmed? See if the starter is sticking in the fly wheel, which will grind like crazy, if it does stick.?

Flywheel area, possibly transmission


the noise might be from a loose bendix on the starter,
the bendix is a little gear in fron of the starter see if there is any visual point to see it nad make sure it keeps away from the flywheel if not have the starter repalced, this bendix have a spring to keep it away from the flywheel also with a flash ligh try to see the closes you can to the center of flywheel sometimes they get crack where they atached to the engine,
and on the shifting might be a bad transmission or the shifter has to be inspected for your mechanic
