Follow the upper radiator hose to the housing where it is located at the top of the engine.

Also possible is blocked radiator, water pump not working and or a head gasket if signs of water in the oil--several possible causes--remove thermostat and boil it in hot water to see if it opens or not.

SOURCE: 1999 Dodge Durango NO HEAT

Bad NEW thermostat? I had the same problem on my first generation Dakota. The problem for me turned out to be the DODGE thermostat I used to replace the old Dodge part. I went and got a Stant from local auto parts store using the standard temperature spec and quit shivering the next time I drove it. I hope that helps!

SOURCE: 1999 volvo s70 overheating

Well My car I changed the head, and the head gasket. The gauge says the engine is overheating, but it is not true, the coolant is perfectly normal and no hose is inflating or whatsoever but the fan is always running.. You can blow your head or head gasket because the sensor is faulty ???!!!! Please I need an answer because I'm using my car for a couple of days even if it says its overheating ( It is not really overheating there probably is a faulty sensor.. ) but i'll stop using it if you can blow you head gasket because of a faulty sensor... !!!

I'd still check the thermostat. Or basically just replace it. Have you ever drained all the antifreeze and flushed the system? Good time to do both. If the hose's get real hot that doesn't really mean the thermostat open. Wouldn't they get hot even if the thermostat didnt open.? If the thermostat was stuck open you'd would have cold air and low temp gauge. Then maybe hit a pump or something and have the thermostat stick closed and have high temp. Maybe water pump. Check it when you have the belt off. Spin, pull & push the water pump pulley around. I'd replaced my water pump at about 110,000 on a '97 dodge Dakota. My 97 never had a very good heater. Always heated up more after driving. Idle never got it warmed up.

The initial problem points to the radiator fan(s) not running at any road speed. Check the fan(s) for noise-free turning by hand. Check fan fuse and relay (swap with similar relay). Turn on the air conditioner which should immediately turn on the fan(s). Overheating while driving could very well be the thermostat--you will need to drain the cooling system before replacing the unit. Blow out the radiator core with compressed air from the engine side to remove bugs and other debris first. Hope this helps!

93 Jetta is overheating. Changed the thermostat and the pump is working. On idle the temp stays down, but while driving rises fast.

Check to make sure there is no air in the cooling system, and make sure the cooling fans are working. The cooling fans should come on,on there own,and go off on there own, without the ac or defrost on,make sure they are off.

Over heating and hard to start

Thermostat needs to be replaced for overheat. If it didn't open, then coolant becomes stagnant then causes engine overheated. Once it was overheated, it destroyed the coolant temp sensor. The signal from this sensor will feed in your ECU to tell it to open your cold start valve to spray extra fuel into engine to assist the start. Replace the Coolant temp sensor for your start problem.

My 2001 VW JETTA GLS IS OVERHEATING

If one pipe from the radiator is hotter than the other one its usually the thermostat or water pump, seen as you already changed the thermostat id say its the waterpump.if you start the car when temp. is syill low enough to take the radiator cap off and leave it idleing and you see bubbles from the water at the cap then you possibly have a blowen head gasket etc

1996 Jetta appears to overheat but no coolent loss

the temp sensor is the trigger for the fans!!
the thermostat may be in upside down??
check new thermostat in a pot of water & heat it up watch that it opens up when it heats up should be at aroun 96 degrees F
otherwise the radiator may need a good clean out or a recore!
there my be a blocked water gallery so engine may need a flush aswell
Cheers Rob
