  • The PCM doesn't even see the O2 sensor until engine temp has reached operating temp, the vehicle goes from open loop when cold,to closed loop when warm, where the PCM uses the O2 sensor to measure the rich/lean of the exhaust content, and from that, adjust fuel richness to achieve 14.7 to 1 air/fuel ratio. So when cold, the O2 sensor is out of the picture anyways. When unplugging sensors,it can be deceitful. The PCM has a program whereas,if a critical sensor (such as the mass air flow) is somehow damaged and out of the picture, the PCM will substitue a generic value that will allow the engine to stay running. So,by unplugging the MAF,it did try to run on it's own better than plugged in,there's the problem area. The vehicle is running better with the MAF unplugged, because the MAF is likely bad,and the PCM is substituting it's generic value when it IS unplugged.Something to recheckThe PROM update is a newer program for the PCM,and likely won't fix it unless the PCM is bad.I would try a good used PCM as a last or later resort, because i have seen my fair share of defective PCM's too.I have taken some PCM's apart, and found capacitors that had gone bad and leaked all over the circuit board, mostly Honda and Mitsubishi and Chrysler though.Good luck, keep me posted.

SOURCE: running lean at idle & rough idle stalling.

Replace the fuel filter, have the fuel pressure check,it is most likely the fuel pump.

i would agree with your diagnosis. i had a similar problem with a crown victoria. disconnecting the maf sensor made it run better. i replaed the sensor and have had no problem since

1997 rodeo 3.2 starts i can rev it up runs smooth then just dies

I would unplug mass air flow sensor and see if it stays running...will run a little rough, but if it changes and keeps it from dieing then, mass air flow is most likely bad..could be fuel related, several things, but that is a simple starting point..
Can you provide some more info...is it driveable? If so does it have a bad miss, or what happens if you try to drive?

1985 toyota camry unplug mass air flow sensor engine will start plug back in engine dies

There is a switch in the airflow meter that keeps the fuel pump relay closed as long as there is airflow. With the meter unplugged, the pump should not run except when the key is turned to start. It would seem to me that you have a wiring issue. Try jumping the fuel pump relay so the pump runs whenever the key is on. (Remove the relay and jump the pump wire to the accessory wire--see top left diagram.) This defeats the safety feature but will keep the pump running.

My 84 supra starts and then dies right after wards ... but if i start it and pump the gas itll stay on till i let go what can be the problemWhat's your problem?

It could be low fuel pressure, or a vac leak, or a problem with the idle air control valve. Also the mass air flow meter, or the cold start valve.
I would start with testing the fuel pressure and the mass air flow meter.

What causes the engine is at normal operating temperature idle roughly and die?

I would check the mass air flow sensor that is located on the air intake (its the box in line on the air intake with wires going into it) with the engine running take a screw driver and smack the mass air flow sensor with the handle... if the engine stalls or starts running real rough that might be the culprit.

1996 t bird 4.6l idles up and down

If it idles up and down real high, its the throttle body sensor. If it's a low up and down idle and runs rough it is mass air flow meter. If you unplug the mass airflow meter and it will just low idle (no up & down) then the mass air flow meter is bad.

does it run well if the engine is warm? if it does it is most probably the water temperature sensor, if not try disconnecting the Air Flow Meter (5/6 pin plug located just after the air filter) and see if it runs better if it does change the a/f meter and post the results.

2002 grand prix runs rough, dies service engine

sounds like you have a vacuum leak, check all the vacuum hoses and replace any broken or kinked ones, also check around the intake manifold gasket for leaks. any air leaks after the air flow meter creates 'un-metered' air which inturn will make the car run rough and stall, hope this helps

2000 Subaru Legacy will not start

If you find that the engine is dying at intersections and runs a rough and fluctuating idle at start up, and you also sometimes lose power even though the engine is running then it is probably your Air Flow Meter or sometimes reffered to as a Mass Airflow Sensor. Eventually, as the AFM deteriates further you will no longer be able to start the engine as the ECU can no longer get accurate flow readings to work out air fuel ratios and shuts it all down to stop damage occuring. 2 ways to fix, replace AFM or upgrade your ECU to one that is capable of running MAPs for air fuel ratio, rather than using a sensor. Hope this helps.
