The following are the general instructions on the start of diagnosing any electronically controlled engine or transmission problem.

The engine and the automatic transmission (transmission control is only for automatics, engine is still computer controlled no matter the transmission type) in this vehicle are computer controlled and in most cases when a fault occurs a fault code is stored in the memory of the computer control module. There are exception to this, such as the Mass Airflow Meter and fuel pressure problems. What must be done is to have all the basic testing done such as a scan of the system for fault codes as well as a check with a live data scanner tool for engine functions that are not within range of normal, a trained technician is required to know what is correct and what isn't, then based on careful diagnostics done from a factory repair manual the correct part is replaced or the wiring repaired or the computer replaced (known as the PCM or ECM,ECU), which is very rarely the problem. Other basic checks must be done as well such as mechanical problems with the engine as well as engine state of tune and mileage on the engine. The transmission can have mechanical issues as well such as no gear engagement at all or a failed pump or other pressure related problems. Also engine mechanical problems can and do cause many drive-ability related problem such as rough idle and other symptoms.

I have a friend who is in the Auto Electric trade and has built a very successful business. He diagonised the system for me and all the codes, resistences and voltages were all in the correct range. I then tested the fuel pressure and that was fine. The car is fitted with new fuel, air and oil filters

    So it is fixed then?

  • Peter Smithy Mar 19, 2013

I wish it was fixed. This car is driving me nuts. I am going to change the idle sensor and the TPS. In my way of thinking these two items control a lot of the motors actions and reactions. If no change is achieved after that, I\'ll change the main CPU. If you can think of anything Dennis I am happy to hear from you

I solved this problem. Someone installed a new timing belt and it was a tooth out. I reset the timing belt and it ran like a dream :)

SOURCE: 2001 Ford Explorer idles rough when at a stop in

sounds like a vacuum intake leak..check a those little tubes for cracks and security. also check your transmission levels, this will sometimes cause a surging problem while driving..if all this checks good then it might be dirty or clogged injectors..purchase a can of Sea Foam from Autozone $10 pour in 1/2 can to half tank of gas and drive around for thirty minutes..highway driving preferred, and see if that will clean up the fuel system. Can i get some feedback, thanks

SOURCE: 1992 Chevy Silverado idles rough why?

Check your MAP and TP sensors. Your throttle body may be having trouble determining position and is compensating by adjusting RPMs.

These are all cylinder misfire codes. I'd look at sparkplugs, coils and dirty injectors.

Motor runs a little rough, idle goes up and down

From my experience with my wife's 97 Wrangler look at the intake manifold for 2 vacuum lines. They will be just under the throttlebody One of them is broken or has come loose. We had this problem several times, idle high, running eratic, until I put a smaller rubber hose on the fitting. Has run good since.

EGR valve may be stuck closed allowing pinging . The Knock sensor can also go bad and not retard timing allowing pinging also . Heavy carbon buildup in the combustion chamber can increase compression causing pinging .

Car is making loud noise & wont idle

your timing marks must be off for the car not to idle. the timing belt is too tight, that is where the noise is coming from. rule of thumb is you should be able to twist the timing belt to just under 90 degrees on the longest section after the tensioner has tensioned and nut on pully it tightened. tensioners usually tension more than they need to.
