Question about Nissan Sentra

Battery light is on in 1987 Nissan

Yesterday the battery light came on in my 1987. The brake light warning came on at the same time. The brake was off, and I had a new alternator put in 1 3/4 years ago. I was able to travel the remaing 22 miles to my home without incident, About 20 minutes ago I went to see if it would still start......and it start strong, but the battery light and brake light came back on as well. Hints on how I can track down the problem?

2004 Nissan Altima 3.5L BATTERY LIGHT went on during 15 minute drive. Next day car "died" while idling after a 20 minute drive. BRAKE WARNING LIGHT & BATTERY LIGHT on prior to full electrical failure.

Start with checking the alternator voltage with a multimeter. With the car off check the voltage in the battery which should be holding 12v charged less if flat of course then start the car and test the battery again. If the alternator is good you should be getting a reading of 14 to 14.5 v if it's the alternator it'll A) not put any charge into the battery or B) be a very low voltage being anything under 13.5 v

Maintenance required light could mean its time for an oil change. Do you have a check engine light too ?
The battery/brake light can mean the brake fluid is low or the battery is not being charged by the alternator.

Sounds like brake light switch has gone bad. It's just above brake pedal under dash. Small plastic switch with a couple wires coming from it. Simple fix.

has to be the alternator, you can determine if it works by putting in a known good battery, checking voltage when running-it should be at least 13.8 volts at the battery with the engine running. If not you can check the alternator output at the rear of the alternator itself-there is a post, it is positive, use the meter to check here. If you get low voltage here (less than 13), you know it is the alternator.
