Check for any leaks under the radiator, check the radiator fluid level in the coolant box in cold engine its low, when hot the radiator fluid is up. If you see less fluid add some water.
Then drive and see if the tempreature needle shows normal operating range. Then you are set and radiator is normal.

Check list for answers to my Montero overheating...


Methods to trouble shoot
(1) check thermostat device. if thermostat is stuck - not working half the water used in cooling system is missing once engine heats up which can lead to over heating. (may need mechanic to check this)
(2) check radiator has water in it . if it is low there may be a leak in cooling system somewhere check rubber hose and radiator are not leaking.
(3) check fan belt is engaging fan in front of radiator
(4) if electric fan check if fan activates once car has heated up
(5) check oil level of engine on dip stick. If low oil add some oil and re check oil dip stick. DO NOT PUT whole oil pack in (don't laugh I know someone who did this and has to go to mechanic and get oil removed)
(6) if rubber hoses blow off connectors then you may have a broken head gasket seal. A pressure test of the radiator will confirm this.
(7) Possible water pump failure. Check by taking cap off radiator and run engine see if water is flowing in radiator and test if water is heating up in the radiator. Remember to put cap back on radiator when finishing test.
(8) check if bubbles or oil are in radiator water this could indicate a blown head gasket problem also.

Overheating engine


check coolant level in the radiator. Check radiator fins condition. Have a coolant system pressure test done to check for leaks. Have a flow test done on the radiator to check for blocked cores. Have a compression test done on the engine to check for head gasket or cracked head/s. Check that the fans(Electric or viscous hub ) are working. Run fault codes and check for problems that affect the tune of the engine. Check the cat converter is not blocking the exhaust. Check and test the thermostat for correct operation. That can be done by starting a cold engine and within 10 minutes of idling the top radiator hose should start to feel warm indicating that the water is circulating

Check Radiator for full coolant, check for blockages of air through radiator , check for cool spots on the fins of radiator if you do you need ether a radiator or a flush or what is called a rod out (Radiator shop work) but VW's are known for there head gaskets going out if they get over hot

The car is over heating--radiator needs water added every day--no visible leaks.


Check ur RADiATOR if its CLOGGED! Checking it by means of TOUCHiNG the BOTTOM PART after running ur engine for 30 min. If the bottom part is not the same as the TOP part of the radiator, it means its CLOGGED and u need to bring to ur nearest garage mechanic to FLUSH OUT or internally clean the radiator assembly! Check also the RADiATOR FAN if it works in a certain temperature! If can't see any leakage, as u say, 'cause of high temperature of ur engine, ur COOLANT goes to the coolant reservoir and overflowing it every time ur engine HEATS UP! Check also the RADiATOR CAP, if the seals are damage or the spring is all corroded up, water heats up and goes thru ur reservoir and doesn't come back to ur radiator when engine colds down, radiator caps FAULT!

How to change a radiator


1988–91 Models
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Properly drain the cooling system into a suitable container.
  3. Disconnect the fan motor and motor connector.
  4. Disconnect the upper and lower radiator hoses.
  5. Disconnect and plug the automatic transaxle cooling lines at the radiator, if equipped.
  6. Disconnect the coolant reservoir overflow hose.
  7. Remove the radiator attaching bolts and brackets.
  8. Remove the radiator with the cooling fan attached.
  9. Remove the cooling fan and shroud from the radiator. NOTE: Check all cooling system hoses for any signs of damage, leaks or deterioration and replace if necessary. To install:
  10. Attach the cooling fan and shroud to the radiator and install the assembly.
  11. Attach the radiator bolts and brackets. Tighten the radiator bracket bolts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  12. Connect the coolant reservoir overflow hose.
  13. Connect the automatic transaxle cooling lines to the radiator, if equipped.
  14. Connect the upper and lower radiator hoses.
  15. Connect the fan motor and thermo-switch wire connector.
  16. Refill the system with the proper type and quantity of coolant, check for leaks and bleed the cooling system.

I changed the thermostat, water pump but it still overheats


The mechanic should check on the radiator and the radiator fan .Also check the cooling fins of the radiator if the cooling fins are worn out then replace them. You should also check if there is a leak in the radiator and then repair the radiator .The radiator fan ,check it also if the the pulley of the fan is working and if not then replace it or repair it.And the engine oil should be check if the engine oil is dirty or diluted then change oil because of sometimes dirty or diluted oil can cause engine over heat.

Replaced water pump and thermostat and radiator and temp sensor still runs hot


you may want to check for leaks in the hoses and at the radiator. You may need to get some air out by squeezing the radiator hoses. Check also the radiator fan if it is working. Check the radiator cap if it is worn out, coolant may escape from the cap.
