SOURCE: 2001 mazda protege will not start

well, with all that you have changed the only two possible things that are left PCM and the ECM....

Do you have an alarm system on this vehicle? If you purchased this car second hand it may have something that is inhibiting the engine from firing. From what you have told us here that would be where I would start looking.

SOURCE: Where is the Electronic Coolant Temperature Sensor

It is on the head on the oppsite side of timing belt 2or3 in down on the end of head.You will see it. This coolant sensor is for the computer not the gauge. Thanks TIM

Standard Rules to Removal the Serpentine Belt with an Automatic Tensioner:
1. Find the Tensioner(s). (See Diagrams on Link)
2. Using a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Tool, Or Wrench OR Ratchet, Rotate/Move the Tensioner USING THE AVAILABLE NUT (on the Pulley or Arm Base) OR the OPENING (3/8ths or 1/2 inch square opening) rotating the Tensioner Pulley/Arm - moving it away from contact with the belt and towards the area where the belt is not in contact with the Tensioner Pulley. The Tensioner is spring loaded, and is hard to rotate/move.
3. Remove the loosened belt off one of the other more easily accessed Pulleys.
4. DO NOT quickly release the Tensioner, but gently allow the Tensioner to rest in its closed position.

Standard Rules for Installing the Serpentine Belt with an Automatic Tensioner:
a. Pick a Pulley that is most easily accessed. This will usually be on top. This will be the last Pulley that the belt will go on.
b. Using the Diagram: Install the new Serpentine Belt on the remainder of the Pulleys....over, under, left right.
c. Using a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Tool or Wrench or Ratchet Tool: Rotate/Move the Tensioner Pulley/Arm "away" from Belt contact area on the Tensioner. This spring is pretty hard and with a new belt, it will be even harder to install. Rotate/Move this to as-close to the maximum allowed inorder to have enough slack in the belt to get it up and over the last pulley.
d. Using your other hand - Pull the Belt up and over the Last remaining Pulley.
e. Before releasing the pressure on the Tensioner, visually inspect the remainder Pulleys and the Belts' Positioning on them

Fuel is metered to the injectors based on a signal from the Engine coolant sensor. When the sensor goes bad usually the engine is slow to start. turn off and it start as normal. A cold engine signal will cause a rich supply causing smoking and misfire when the engine is at operating temperature. The gauge may read right but that does not mean the sensor is sending the right signal to the computer.

What is the purpose of the water sending unit located at the thermostat?

For 1994 Mazda Protege 1.8L MFI SOHC 4cyl the Coolant Temperature Sensor is located under hood, driver side, upper engine area, end of cylinder head, mounted in top of water outlet, work for activated the electrci cooling fan whan is necessary.

Engine cooling fan run all the time when car is running. had t stat replaced recently. what controls the fan relay?. unplug coolant sensor and fan stays running. need a wiring diag.

Hi, the relay is turned on by the PCM based on data from the coolant temperature sensor. Disconnecting the sensor sends the computer into safe mode so it keeps the fan on. Check the sensor wire continuity to the PCM. If good, try replacing the sensor. Please let me know if you have more questions.

The fan in my 1996 Mazda Protege just stopped working. I have no heat. Do I need to replace the motor?

put new temperature sensors in the car and that should fix your problems. the temp sensors control when the fan kicks on and off.

2003 Mazda Protege5. Cooling fan on radiator is not running. This is the main fan on the left side of the radiator.

First, check the relay for the cooling fans. Not sure about Mazdas but Fords have two coolant temperature sensors. One for the gauge or light on the dash and one for the fan relay. Check and make sure the sensor hasn't went bad or come unplugged. If these don't fix it the fan itself may be bad.
