The 1995 and up Jimmy’s and Blazer’s use thesame system for engaging the front diff. They are all made to “shift on the fly” while driving down the road withnothing to do but press the button on the dash. (Do NOT shift into 4 Low while driving at higher speeds at it can dodamage). If the dash light flashes andyou hear a clicking sound that means you have power to the relay. If the vehicle 4 High lights stops flashingand it goes back into 2 High then the problem is likely that you have no vacuumto the 4 X 4 actuator module which is located below the battery tray. Remove the battery and tray; look for a holeburnt in the vacuum line or actuator module rubber diaphragm. When the activator get vacuum it pulls acable that attaches to the front diff engaging it, when engaged the wires onthe front diff send a signal to the 4 X 4 light on the dash telling you it is engaged). If the battery has ever leaked the acid runsdown onto the actuator causing the problem. If no holes found in the hose or actuator diaphragm I would use batterycables and hook up the battery and start vehicle then check for vacuum byputting my finger on the end of the actuator hose. If there is vacuum then problem in actuatoror cable linkage. If no vacuum I wouldthen trace back the vacuum lines to find where it is off or leaking, NOTE: As the heater control operates on vacuum and some other vehicle systemsdo as well bear this in mind, has your vehicle had heater control problems orbeen running rough, this could explain a lot of potential problems. Attached to the hood on the left side(drivers side) on 1997 and older models is a vacuum (a “ball”) canister, newermodels the canister is located in the left fender by the brake module, makesure the vacuum line is attached there. Please rate this suggestion as I never know if it is worth my timefilling these things out…

SOURCE: 2000 blazer 4 wheel drive problem

It's most likely the "four wheel drive actuator" This is located on the front differential housing. It's cylindrical shaped and has a large hex (about
1-1/4") and two wires coming out of it. Usually they short out and blow the fuse but, I've also seen where they just quit working and sometimes they just get slow to work. The "actuator" has a heating element in it and it warms up, some sort gas, causing it to expand thus engaging the front wheels. In cold weather it may take a minute or so for it to engage, so put in four wheel drive and wait for a bit and see what happens.

Will not go in to 4wd mode at all and service 4wd light is on

Problem is in electrical control.
1. check computer codes.(turn ignition 1 click ON/OFF) do this 3 times quickly leaveing ON. Then read codes by odometer.
2.Check 12v power to 4wd switch at dashboard and tranfer case.If there is power to transfer case the control is bad. Check gear oil there may be a sensor stopping it.

Trying to remove oil pan, but the transfer case is in the way of get bolt out, how or what do you have to do to get the oil pan off 1997 blazer 4x4

I;m doing the same on a 4x4 95 yukon. I used a 1/4 drive deep well 3/8 socket and a 1/4 to 3/8 adapter - it was just short enougto ckear transfer case but long enough to clear the pan. But now my pan wont come off because of transfer case in the way. I am looking at lowering transfer case vs raising front of engine- good luck

Hi, My blazer makes a really high pitch noise under the middle section of the truck. I am sure it is the 4 wheel, but I dont think I should hear this noise. (Almost sounds if air is coming out of a tire)

Sounds like the transfer case is out of oil. Remove the filler plug and dip the oil with your little finger, or a long piece of wire. If the oil level is very low the bearings will be scored already and a rebuild of the transfer case will be required.

I have a 98 chevy blazer with the 4wheel stuck in high

You will see the motor move when you engage the switch on the dash. The motor is on the bottom of the transfer case behind the transmission. Most likely it's the actuator for the hub lockouts under the battery tray. They wear out after a few years. It could also be the cable that locks the hubs that goes from the actuator to the hub lock in the front differential. Also, check your front differential oil level, if it's not getting oil it won't disengage. Check to make sure the hoses between the transfer case and the actuator are not leaking. If that isn't the case there is a air activated switch ont he top of the transfer case where the air hoses plug into, it has three hoses that go to it. That switch screws in but you have to lower the transmission cross member to get to it. It could also be bad, it costs about twelve dollars. Good luck.

I need to change the oil in the transfer case but i dont know what kind to use or how much.

your transfer case does not use regular motor oil..it will use gear oil which can be purchased at any local parts store or even wal-mart (most part stores can tell you how much you need to add to the unit but a good rule of thumb is add the gear oil until it starts to drip out the fill/check hole..

98 Jimmy 4WD clunk

It seems like no one else hear at FixYa is responding yet to both your requests about clunking in 4wd.
I see two requests....in the first a 2000 blazer from Gloeckz
there is a rapid clunking in 4wd!
In the second it clunks hard going in then won't drive!
This is rayenc11s' 98 Jimmy 4WD clunk I'm no trans specialist and not familiar with repairing or troubleshooting serious 4wd problems but it sounds like this may be a problem in the transfer case.

Since no one seems to be helping you but me I'd suggest you go to a transmission shop and ask them if this is a common problem that may lead to a bad transfer case if not corrected!

Make sure you have the proper fluid in your transmission case, transfer case and differential case first or have a quick oil change place check it for you!

Hope this is helpful.

Good Luck!
