Question about 1995 Audi 90
Hi, I have an Audi advant 2.8 with 150k miles. It's in great shape and only one thing bother me, the car burns oil and sometimes I can smell it in the cabin when the heat is on. I've replaced the cam seals and tensioners so just trying to get an idea on what other issue I may have.
ur problem is very easy to solve, but its an expensive fix..........($$$)
i dont know how much u know about cars, but every car with en engine(other than the Wankel) which has pistons......the pistons run in the cylinders of the engine block......at the top of the engine is where all the work is done, at the bottom part(just below the pistons), there is a lot of oil to lubricate all of the fast moving engine parts.....when a car burs oil what usually happens is that the oil goes up from the crank case, squesses between the piston and the cylinder walls and gets burned with the gas......and vise versa, at the power stroke the exhaust gasses enter the crankcase and slowly burn the oil that way.......so oil burns every 2 of the 4 strokes......there is 4 strokes in one rpm......idling is about 1500 rpm for ur audi....u do the math.......and the oil slowly burns........when the car heats up the oil burns even faster bacuse the temperature of the oil is already high.......
the pistons are equipped with piston rings to prevent oil from getting into the combustion chamber and exhaust gasses getting into the crankcase.......and the tolerance between the pston and the cylinder is also very important for the car not to burn oil......
tehre are a few ways to fix it.........the best and the most expensive would be to: bore out the cylinders, get new pistons (v6...) and get new rings, and u also might need to get the block and heads faced off(if there is any warpage....the heads are aluminum...).......
this process is called and engine rebuild and could cost u well over $2000 depending on what kind of quality u are looking for.......(its not worth it.....especially for this car, they are very cheap)...
the cheapest way to fix the problem about 75% would be just to get new piston rings.......but as soon as u take those heads off....shaving them is a must if they are warped.........and while u still have them off u might need to do the valves, which could also help the problem......and while u have the pistons out, might as well change them too...right???? so its spendy......
u might also have another problem,......a faulty gasket or o-ring, and the oil might be leaking from that faulty spot right on the exhaust, and might burn the oil that way...........that would defently explain the smell getting into the car.....if this is what is wrong, then the fix could be very easy, fast, and cheap...
if ur burning too much oil, it could be both of the problems at the same time.........plus a few more on top of that......
