Question about 1997 Toyota Camry

Open Question

Toyota whirring noise

Lately when I start up my car I hear a whirring noise from under the hood. It sounds like a loose belt or something but I just got the timing belt changed less than a year ago so it shouldn't be anywhere near worn out yet. The whirring noise is pretty loud from both inside and outside the car, particularly when it is cold, but goes away once the heat of the sun has had time to warm the hood and engine up. I am having no other issues with it. Steering is fine, braking is smooth and silent. Acceleration can be a bit sluggish, but has been that way since I bought the car.

SOURCE: loud rattleling noise from engine comapartment

Thank you for responding to my email regarding my car problem. Your suggestion to replace the timing belt/tensioner had nothing to do with it because they have been replaced recently and infact I may have found the problem and please correct me if I am wrong.
Well, I performed a compresion test on the engine and found out that two of the cylinders are only putting out 150psi compare to the other two which is 180psi. I also found out that these two cylinders are not firing even if they are getting fuel into them and receiving spark from the spark plug wires. You can troubleshoot this easily by pulling the spark plug wires one at a time and you should be able to tell a diffirence on the engine idle. If no change on the idle then that cylinder is not firing. Right now my car is parked and I'm rebuilding the enigine myself.

I have a 1994 Toyota camry xle 6cyl.,I started the car this morning and heard a whirring noise under the hood. Opened up the hood & the noise was coming from where the pulleys are .And had not heard...

Was the timing belt replaced recently? If your crank pulley/harmonic balancer is wobbling, it is probably loose. Do not run the engine, if this part falls out, it will cause more damage.

I am hearing a noise, like a whirring sound that speeds up with the acceleration and makes no noise when in park. Does this sound like cv joint trouble?

a whirring sound can be a bearing on a component under the hood.(power steering pump, alternator, idler pulley bearing, etc),it can also be a serpentine belt from a worn belt or belt tensioner a cv joint won`t make a whirring sound(it will cause a clunking noise or a vibration).

1992 Pickup: loud squelling sound under hood when started...

Sounds like a loose belt.

There are a few things that can cause a belt to slip like that.

The belt could be not tightened all the way. If it uses a sepentine belt with a tensioner, the tensioner could be bad. If it is not a serpentine belt, then you will have multiple belts and the one that is making the noise can be loose. Use something to pry it tight and tighten down the bolts holding the component th belt goes to.

It can also be a bad pulley. Pulleys have bearings inside of them, at times the bearings will go out and make the pulley hard to turn. You can usually find this easily by taking the belt off and turning the pulley with your hand. If it is hard to turn or makes a grinding noise when turned...it is bad and needs to be replaced.

Old belts can also cause this along with a belt that is wet. There is a spray on Belt Dressing that helps get rid of noisy belts, but I consider that a bandaid to a bigger problem.

Could be a possible break down of the plug wires. Seems that I remember hearing if your plug wires are breaking down inside and if its up against the motor you can hear something that sounds like interference in your radio. Just a thought, might want to check it out.

Squealing engine

My guess without hearing it, is that you have a loose or worn belt causing the screeching, or squeeling noise your hearing, but as far as sluggish goes, that may be another thing all together. I'd suggest having your belts looked at and adjusted or replaced as necessary. Once it's confirmed or not that your noise was from that or maybe even a tensioner, then we can go from there. In the meantime, chek your oil level just as a precaution, if you haven't lately, and top it up as needed. They are usually a pretty reliable car, so I wouldn't hit the panic button on it being an engine problem yet.
