It could be a bad solenoid, or stuck valve(Most likely). Worst case is a transmission rebuild.

Gear stuck transmission


Make sure the transmission has a good ground, surprising how many problems are mis-diagnosed. I had this problem and did research and found this out.

having the transmission rebuilt in 2010 means that the tranny is 7 years old since service so there can be any amount of faults
run the fault codes to check for problem TCM, VSS, servos and solenoids
check the vacuum actuator for the transmission and vacuum lines
change the transmission oil
the engine light also reports on transmission failures

either your transmission doesnt have fluid, syncro to 2nd went bad, or shift linkage may either need to be adjusted or changed out... check and see if transmission has fluid and try double clutching out of 2nd if this is required then syncro went bad

Hi.

If the transmission is stuck in first gear then it is in limp mode. That means that a transmission problem has been detected. If it is stuck in a different gear, then the transmission fault is directly causing the gear getting stuck. The first action would be doing a full code scanning at the car dealer.

Refill the transmission fluid. Check the shifter linkage cable even if I do not think there is a problem in there. Check the throttle position sensor and the speed sensor. The first in located on top of throttle body, the second is in the transmission. Check wiring from Transmission control module to the solenoid pack mounted in the transmission. Access valve body and check solenoids in transmission. Before doing anything else, have a code scanning done and see if the result is pointing at the problem.

Whilst driving, my E280 gear box moved into neutral for about a second or two, and it shifted into the next gear with a strong sudden ****.


seems like faulty transmission, the reason is when you drive the car gears are up shift form 1 to 2 , 2 to 3, 3 to 4, 4 to 5, like that it should be 7 speed auto trans mission in your car, if you mention when which gear up shift the problem occurred I can give more information about what's the fault in transmission, so according to your details it's like two gears are engage together, when two gears are engage same time the transmission control unit understand it's something getting wrong in the transmission according to actual value of gear ratio, then trans mission change the gear to neutral for a second and after that it give the one lower gear than the gear which was stuck and drive fine, this thing might not happen all the time but is the problem verse it can happen all the time, the solution is you must get your car to the Mercedes dealer workshop then they can find what's the wrong inside the transmission before remove it, they have advance diagnose tool for it, then they will repair your transmission, this is the cheapest way, if some one repair your transmission without right understanding regarding what's the exactly fault you will be stuck, may have to be remove again and again,

The town and country vans are know for transmission problems and it would not be stuck in 2nd gear if it was in limp mode. Limp mode typically controls the engine. I have seen people do a transmission flush/filter and add lucas to temporary fix the problem. There is also a good chance that the transmission has a solenoid problem preventing it from shifting into any other gears but second. Hope this helps!

Most likely your speed sensors are bad, this causes the transmission to seem like its "stuck" in second gear or in "limp" mode. I can also be your TCM (transmission control module). But from your description, it's most likely the speed sensors located on the top of the transmission. Make sure you replace them with an exact replacement are they are not interchangeable.

Usually when a manual shift transmission starts jumping out of gear it's because the synchronizers are worn. The transmission will more than likely have to be repaired and or rebulit by a reputable transmission shop.
