Question about 1992 Chevrolet Cavalier
When I put the shifter knob in park, the button on the side usually pops out and locks the shifter in place. This isn't happening now. The button is pushed in and will not pop out. I have to remove the key from the ignition with it in the on position, and unhook the positive wire from the battery to keep it from draining my battery. Does anyone know what the problem is with my shifter?

SOURCE: I cant get the key
I cant get the key out or lock steering column and the automatic transmission shift lever locks up in park.
Now if I take the battery off every thing works fine.
This sure seems like a reset problem.I run the car by not having it in the locked column position and get the shifter to work by putting a key in the hole furnished
by chevy to bypass shift lock. thank you

SOURCE: Gear shifter
The shifter cable and linkage may be getting sticky. Locate the linkage and cable on the gear selector (transmission side under hood) and spray them with some PB Blaster or WD 40.

Does your key turn all the way to where it should be when you usually take it out of the ignition? If not, then you have a bad nuetral saftey switch. If so try turn the wheel in either direction while attempting to pull out the key. I hope tis helped you out. It would be greatly appreciated if you could rate my answer, Thanks. MIKE-
