Question about 1996 Jeep Cherokee

Jeep not turning over....sometimes..?!

My Jeep Cherokee Sport will start without problem about 30% of the time.  The rest of the time when you turn the ignition, it suddenly and abruptly stops as soon as it hits the starter, before it has a chance to turn over.  It has been suggested that this could be caused by an alarm system wired into the starter that is preventing it, but it seems that if that were the case, it would never start..?  What else could be causing this?  Vapor lock a possibility?  If so, how could I find that out?

It doesn't start. The engine sounds like it is going to start but instead it is like a giant hand reaches in and stops it just as it is going to start.

Thank you for your suggestions. Haven't had a chance to try either solution, my dad died and have been busy with arrangements. I really appreciate the help though.

It sounds like your starter is getting ready to die completely. After disconnecting the battery, take off the starter and have it tested.
Good luck!

Well with 4.0L cherokee's if the battery voltage is low or the battery died at one point in time the idle air control valve loses its memory of where it is supposed to be and the result it either i almost start or a start then stall immediatly. try starting it while pumping the gas pedal slowly. if it starts up you need to try to keep it going by keeping you foot on the gas just enough to keep it from stalling. usually after about 5 mins of this the IAC relearns its positon ands its good from then on. It could also be a faulty Throttle position sensor i have seen them cause similar problems on the 4.0L. but give that a try and let me know what happens

I have a 1994 jeep grand cherokee and it always starts up, but sometimes it just shuts off randomly while I'm driving and after a few minutes of rest turns back on, the battery will still be worki

Install a new crank shaft sensor. I had the same problem with my wife's Jeep. It would run fine fore days at a time then quit. When the crank sensor goes out their is no spark or injection of fuel into the engine. This is a Hall Sensor. They can be intermittent, and affected bu heat. If your Jeep will not start, try freeing the sensor and see if it starts. Cold Freeze is used in electronics to test

1996 jeep cherokee sport 4.0 L it will stall

it looks like your engine is having an over rich fuel mixture maybe, thatswhy when you press the pedal to the floor it starts becouse you allow lots of air to help clean the mixture while cranking, also you should have black smoke in the tailpipe until it cleans up and runs fine, i think youre having a leak in one our more injectors you should check them first for proper seal under pressure these is done in an injector test machine, second it may be a defective map sensor these trucks some times have a bad map and dont give a MIL (malfunction indacator lamp) and last but more rare to be is a blocked fuel pressure regulator chek fuel pressure it should be between 38 and 45 psi and it shoul hold these pressure when you turn off the engine if pressure drops fast its injector seal problems or fuel pump check

It could be your Crank Shaft Sensor. That's what it was on my 99 Cherokee Sport the first time that happened.

1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport automatic sometimes won't start

switch can be changed, instructions in most manuals (even cheap ones) New one is about$ 230, used abt $30, or you can take apart old one and clean contacts but be careful on disassembly or stuff inside will fall out. Should take about an hour or so. Hardest part is removal because they get stuck on shaft.
