The tensioner is spring loaded and you use a special tool to deflect it way from the belt to loosen the belt for removal. Pull the tensioner to the driverside to release tension off the belt. __________________

SOURCE: im replacing timing belt, accessory belts and water pump on my hyundai elantra gls 1997 sta wgn auto transmission. (1)Where is bolt to drain engine block coolant?(2)After removing front engine mountin

(1) No need to know if engine block coolant drain plug was available. Once the water pump was removed, all engine block coolant was drained. (2) After removing the three engine mounting bracket bolts, I also removed the mount bracket from the the body and made enough room to replace the timing belt easier.

You have to release tension at the tensioner pulley. Lisle tools makes a good wrench for this as clearance is tight.

SOURCE: water pump replacement for a 1996 Land Rover Discovery

Remove the fan by renting a spanner tool for this at Autozone. Take the fan off and then it is easy to access the waterpump. I just replaced both water pump and fan clutch on mine. Both need to be replaced if you are replacing one or the other. Easy job. I have found original bolts are sometimes hard to remove but do not break them off if possible.

  • These instructions are for The range Rover, but I can't see them changing the steup

  • Park your Range Rover in a safe place, open the hood and disconnect the black, negative battery cable.

  • 2

Locate the drive-belt tensioner pulley (this pulley does not drive any accessory on the engine but provides tension to the belt). If the pulley has a recessed squared in the middle, use a 1/2-inch drive-breaker bar to pivot the pulley toward the center of the engine, then slide the drive belt from under the pulley. Carefully release the tensioner pulley. On other models, the tensioner pulley comes with adjusting and pivot bolts. Use a wrench or ratchet and socket to loosen the bolts and release the belt tension. Other tensioner pulleys come equipped with a third bolt to prevent the adjusting bolt from sliding and releasing the belt tension. Loosen this bolt if necessary. On other vehicle models without a tensioner pulley, it is necessary to loosen the alternator mounting and adjusting bolts to release the belt tension using a wrench or ratchet and socket.

  • 3

Slide the drive belt off the alternator pulley, but leave the belt properly mounted on the rest of the accessory pulleys on the engine.

  • 4

Remove the two alternator mounting bolts using a wrench or ratchet and socket. Move the alternator away from the engine just enough to unplug the alternator electrical connector and wire, then lift the alternator off the engine.

  • 5

Set the new alternator in place. Plug the alternator electrical connector and install the electrical wire. Install the two mounting bolts and torque them to 18 foot-lbs., using a torque wrench (see Tips for more information).

  • 6

Slide the drive belt over the alternator pulley. Depending on the belt-tension system on your vehicle, either: (1) slide the belt over the idler pulley after pivoting the pulley with the breaker bar, then carefully release the tensioner; or (2) adjust the pulley locking and adjusting bolts; or (3) push the alternator away from the engine using a pry bar to provide the necessary tension to the drive belt and tighten the alternator-mounting bolts. Double-check to make sure the belt is properly seated over the pulleys ribs.

Connect the black, negative battery cable

What is the serpintine belt for range rover v8 4.4 pterol

If I read your post correctly.....
The serpentine belt is also more commonly known as the fan belt.
Located at the front of your engine behind the radiator. As your engine runs, the cooling fan/water pump, alternator, a/c compressor and belt tensioner pulley are all propelled by the same belt which runs a serpentine pattern thru and around them all. If you are getting a fault message or alert of any kind regarding your belt you need to address it immediately. Aside from sudden stranding there are multiple systems that can be damaged from an ineffective or malfunctioning belt. Hope this answers your question correctly, feel free to repost with additional info or inquiry. I will help however I can.
